Oh, It's the New Year!

So I was thinking about New Years Eve, and specifically the kissing tradition that accompanies it. What's that all about? I'm confused. Call me crazy but I thought the New Year was about reacquainting ourselves with old friends, remembering these friendships during an evening of communal celebration of a year past and a new year commencing. Am I wrong in that thought? Since when did lusting after mysterious women and smooching strangers take precedence over these things? Why do we want to begin the New Year with hangovers, headaches and one-night stands? The commencement to something grand, a new year full of glorious possibilities and personal goals has transformed itself into a commencement in herpes, gonorrhea and genital warts summed up in one drunken, lustful and ridiculous evening. But perhaps this is the bitterness talking. Perhaps it's because I've never taken part in these faultily amorous outings. But perhaps not. Perhaps I'm simply content to keep away. I don't know. I do know that my aversion to these so called traditions will remain. But this doesn't mean that I don't like to kiss, or don't want to kiss anyone on the eve of the New Year. It simply means that I won't kiss anyone for the reasons mentioned above; I won't kiss the mystery woman floating amidst the heady onlookers, playing favorites with her cleavage; I won't kiss the woman adrift in her own passive intoxication, amiably draping herself in arms unwanted.

This New Year's eve, friends, acquaintances, land lovers(or lubbers) please be careful out there. Just because it's the night before a brand new year, doesn't mean you won't regret it in the morning. And you should regret it. Kiss your loved ones. Kiss because you yearn for love with this one. But don't kiss, take part in unsolicited coitus and itch for the rest of your living days.
