OH, JUST the USUAL DAY

Kathryn Neff Perry
I don't think my children are really very different from anyone else children, and my husband probably isn't either.

Why is it whenever anything happens the children call "The MOM" and not "The DAD"?

Just once I would love to come home from work, sit down to read the newspaper and casually say, "How was your day dear," and have my husband be able to reply as follows:

"We were so busy at work today. I feel like I've been run over by a train.

The kids called me several times. Once to remind me we are out of ketchup.

The next time was because Jason forgot to the take the permission slip I signed for the field trip with him, so I had to give permission over the phone to his teacher, while two people were on hold. The third time was to see if I knew anyone who wanted a puppy.

When I pulled in the driveway I saw the kids cat along the side of the road. So of course I had to tell them about their cat, and then bury it myself.

I came in the house, worked my way into the kitchen by picking up shoes, clothes, cups, plates, coats and books along the way. I discovered the dog had eaten a pair of Reeboks.

The son called to say his car died on the way to work and could I call his grandfather to fix it and could I hurry to pick him up and take him to work on time.

Then after I cooked dinner, washed the dishes, washed and dried three loads of laundry, I finally sat down to read the paper."

Or maybe my husband would say, "Oh, just the usual day dear."
