Oh Lord Why?

When One Must Die

Shana Dines

Oh Lord why?
When one must die,
Why?
In such painful ways?

Watching friends and loved ones,
Slowly fade away,
Is painful but manageable.

Oh Lord why?
When one must die.
Why?
In such slow agony?

In painful agony,
Loss of dignity,
Gasping for breath,
Why must death,
Be so painful and slow?

I would not wish this horror,
On my worst enemy,
Why must one die in such misery?
Soulful eyes bleakly appeal.

Oh dear precious friends,
I will always ask Lord why?
Until I die.
I pray that I in my selfishness,
Don't have to go through another.

Oh Lord I ask why?
I know you are with them,
But I can't or will ever understand.

And all I can do is pray,
And hold their hands.

We have lost several friends lately from slow deaths of cancer and other horrific illnesses. We have two now that are inches away from death. I hope that they can go quickly but it doesn't seem to be happening. I don't run from pain and death anymore. I want to, but I think it is important to be supportive and loving to those who are struggling with dying.

I couldn't do that for my Grandma who died 41 years ago this December. This is for you Grandma.

It is important to support those who are dying. Most of us want to run from that which is painful and uncomfortable.

Thank you - the recent loss of a friend make this all the more poignant.

I am so sorry for the pain and loss of so many loved ones... Sometimes it seems to me that it is the fate of the best and kindest to suffer the most. Your beautiful poem shows a lot of pain, but also a lot of strength. (((hugs)))

A poem. there was a family friend who was one of the most Christian man I'd ever met, in word AND deed. When we saw him whither away slowly and painfully I asked myself this question. It seemed so unfair. Thanks for this!

It's so hard to see someone die a painful death. Very heart wrenching.

This pulled at my heartstrings... :o)

Excellent poem. I often wonder the same thing. Why where we given a death sentence by God to mankind and all its descendants just because Eve took a bite of an apple from a tree god planted right next to where she lived. That is a fair God? A loving and forgiving God? Not in my book. Great poem.

I am sorry to hear of your situation. Sometimes it seems like there are no easy answers. Anyway, your Grandma would be proud of this.
