Oh No They Didn't..

Only Watch If You Have a Strong Stomach

The follow video showing unwanted chicks being tossed alive into a grinder at an Iowa hatchery was made secretly by hidden camera and microphone by a Mercy for Animals employee who got a job at the plant, showing a worker at Hy-Line Egg Hatchery sorting through a conveyor belt of chirping chicks, tossing live male chicks into the grinders because they are not as profitable as the females. They give no eggs, nor are they viable meat producers as quickly or as plentiful as the females of the species. This cruel treatment obviously doesn't drip enough blood on their precious bottom line.

Mercy for Animals is a animal protection organization whose executive director, Nathan Runkle, asks the logical question, "We have to ask ourselves if these were puppies and kittens being dropped into grinders, would we find that acceptable?" and sensibly answering, "I don't think that most people would."

The Mercy for Animals Group said this is common industry practice, a statement confirmed by United Egg Producers, a trade group for U.S. egg farmers.

This hatchery is one of the nation's leading egg producers, referring to the practice as "instantaneous euthanasia" and claims it is supported by the animal veterinary and scientific community. I refuse to believe that. Surely there is a more humane way to euthanize any living creature, but why is the life of this one so dispensible? There aren't enough hungry people in the world that a more humane method can't be devised while serving the greater good? No pun intended, but wouldn't that be killing two birds with one more considerate stone?

I understand that Runkle's group wants to get people to stop eating eggs and this video might sway a lot of people to their way of thinking, but it is more than an attention getter to a cause. It is video evidence of the epitome of cruelty to animals and it should be stopped for whatever your personal reasons for finding it offensive, spread the word and write your Congress member.
