* Apparently, many Oh, Sleeper fans are hung up on labeling music. It's a joke that people have to section off everything within the realms of heavy metal/ rock by the millionth degree to feel like they are a part of something else or different or new. That's called "posing" and less about the music than it is something else. I'm listening for music without segregating by genre bounds too deeply/ reviewing/ expressing what said music causes me to puke out in written word. So, note: I am not using the word SCREAMO as a label, I am using it as a descriptive in my own language.
Once a band charges money for their music it becomes a product or service and any consumer of said product or service, regardless of expertise in any field, has an equally valid opinion and their thoughts hold as much merit as anyone's. Especially when they are actually taking the time to give the product a chance. I personally go into every "review" with an open mind and tend to mention any predetermined notions I may have had going in and then how those were altered or affected my opinion. And now a review from the deaf ten year old girl trapped inside of me:
Oh, Sleeper thou art sleepy time screamo. There is future potential in the sounds, but I'm not sure it can ever be realized. "Children Of Fire" is a heavy metal album from the band Oh, Sleeper, my first time ever hearing the band, and first impressions are a drag here.
The best songs on "Children Of Fire" are: "Endseekers," "Shed Your Soul," and "In The Wake Of Pigs."
"Endseekers": Stairway to Hell screamo. Tap dance to this!
"Shed Your Soul": They seem to be telling us a lot via screaming over heavy rock metal noise. Something about "what if we're wrong" and aliens or something, I dunno. It's got some character, but not enough to keep it from blending in to the wall of sound.
"The Marriage Of Steel and Skin": Useless screamo metal.
"Hush Yael": There is some pop rock melody interjected, but it is just as boring as the screamo metal it exchanges lines with.
"The Conscience Speaks": A brief interlude where they try to carry a tune ala high pitched girl voice. Why waste this time? Make a song.
"Dealers Of Fame": Sounded like Kittie coming out of the gate, but dats a dude. Screaming rant and rave, ah, Kittie would have been better.
"Means To Believe": When they deviant from the screamo formula that isn't working for them and do a step up from acoustic ballad it feels pretentious. Get the screamo metal right first! The opening song of the album was aiight, build, dang it, build.
"In The Wake Of Pigs": It reminds me of heavier Suicidal Tendancies.
"Claws Of A God": WAAAAtch Out! We'll scream your eyes OUT! Not a song worthy of the metal Gods.
"The Family Ruin": The haunting little family tale that unfolds in non scream vocals deserves better accompaniment. The scream vocals don't feel like they are saying or adding anything interesting as a monotonous rage void of passion for the subject at hand.
"Chewing The Stitch": Yell, yell, more yell.
"Children Of Fire": And more. The end. Less

Post a CommentThe music itself brings out what type of reviewer I am, if it brings out a deaf ten year old girl, then there you go.
How metal works does not apply to what is going on here. Labels and who can say what or access what in terms of music and products in order to express how said product makes them feel should not be conformed to merely those who are every day listeners of said stuff, many people, like myself are open to all genres. And there is no right "name," music is music, people obsessed with labeling tend to be posers, I mean what if they yodeled on a song, would you then have to call it YODELCORE? Wait, is there Yodelcore...
Ok, I respect your right to have a different opinion, but, in my mind, if you knew how "metal" worked, you'd know what you're talking about.
I mean, you don't even use the right name for goodness sake!
So, maybe try not to give opinions on subjects you don't know much about?
While I have yet to listen to this album, I want to address the writing here. This author seems very biased against "screamo" and from the sounds of it, is a rather sarcastic person as well. This "article" is very poorly written and is a perfect example of how not to write a review. It reads like something out of a high school newspaper from a jock who hates rock because the rap music he likes is way better.
I've got nothing against them... but I'm surprised they let deaf people review music.
Wow, just wow, really? These songs look like they've been reviewed by a ten-year-old girl who thinks Bieber and Montana are heavy.
@Faust Be careful, you might disappear when they hit the ground!
Me no care about complex timing or over analyzing, as average joe listener I care about whether or not I enjoyed the music, it entertained me, it moved me, or it touched me in the music tickle spots. How could I go into it with expectations when I had never even heard of the band before? For all I knew they were Latin pop. I think I'll go review some more Oh, Sleeper. Just for fun I will go into the listening expecting Latin pop.
Yeah this is the worst review I have ever seen. Come on man can you at least do some research on music theory and maybe on how much work it takes to scream. Any critical music listener knows that Oh, Sleeper uses complex time signatures and guitar riffs. You obviously did not listen to this for the music you probably listened to it with expectations that it would be something like Slipknot or Five Finger Death Punch. Also you are not a Hard Rock or Metal listener if you think this album is bad I have not met a metalhead who has hated this record.
Credibility sounds like it is for Credits, I'm being a Critic, my criticability is what should be questioned.
I mean, come on, I am a heavy rock/ metal fan and I liked Demi Lovato better than Oh, Sleeper!
