Oh, Those Strange Kansas Laws

Who knows how long the wait could be? If two trains meet on the same track in Kansas, neither shall proceed until the other has passed. Pedestrians crossing a highway in the state must wear tail lights. Welcome to the strange world of Kansas laws.

Why anyone would try that anyway, who knows? Another strange Kansas law is that one may not shoot at a rabbit from a motorboat.

Still another strange Kansas law is that it is illegal to catch fish with one's hands.

Mules may never be used to hunt ducks in Kansas.

It is illegal to put ice cream on cherry pie.

Many cities in Kansas have their own strange laws.

Besides being in unbelievably bad taste, it is illegal to urinate on the side of a building in Derby. The text of the law also forbids urinating on any alley, street, highway, in any place where one can been seen by another if the area has not been designated as a restroom. A violation of the law is a misdomeanor.

It is also illegal to hit a vending machine in Derby because you lost money in it. The law specifically states that if one willingly opens, removes, or damages any parking meter, vending machine, or coin telephone machine, to commit theft, he is guilty of a Class A violation.

It is also illegal in the city to ride any animal down a road. The law specifically names horses, but also states it is illegal to use other animals for the same purpose. The law makes an exception if the animal is to be used in a parade or for public display.

Another strange law in Derby, Kansas, is that it is illegal for persons to "screech" the tires on their vehicles. One may not screech his wheels, or speed the vehicle or turn a corner in such a manner as to cause his tires to screech. Violation of the law is a misdomeanor and can lead to a $500 fine and imprisonment of up to 30 days.

Marshall Dillon may not be around, but you may not spit on a sidewalk in Dodge City. The city also requires you to provide a horse water troth, if you have a place of business

If you ever enter Lawrence, Kansas, you are required by law to sound your horn to warn horses of your arrival. It might be painful too, but it is also illegal to wear a hat with a bee in it.

It is illegal to picket a funeral in Overland Park.

One may not use a musical car horn in Lawrence, Kansas.

In Salina, you may not leave your car unattended, if it is running.

In Topeka, you may not drive your car through a parade. It is illegal to sing the alphabet on the local streets at night. It is also illegal to spit on the local sidewalks in this city.

In Wichita, if you are ever convicted of carrying or using bean snappers, you may be fined.

New York has its outdated and trivial laws, too. One to remember is that if you wear pajamas in public, anyone who sees you doing so can take you directly to a mental hospital.
