Ohio's First Zipline Adventure! Glide Over the Hocking Hills!

Tara Dodrill
Hocking Hills is the home of Ohio's first zip line adventure attraction. Visitors can spend three hours tempting gravity while gliding along the Hocking Hills Canopy Tours attraction. USA Today ranked the Hocking Hills Canopy Tours as the hottest new attraction in Ohio. Visitors to the Hocking Hills area can explore the treetops during an exhilarating trip above caves and rock cliffs.

The Hocking Hills Canopy Tours opened in fall 2008 and has been growing in popularity since the first zip liner donned a safety harness. Hocking Hills visitors who are looking for extreme recreational adventures will become frequent customers. Zip liners are suspended on a network of cables, getting a bird's eye view of the Hocking River, native wildlife, plants, and caves.

By adding a thrill seeker attraction to the Hocking Hills area, the popular section of southern Ohio will soon surpass tourism expectations for the region. The Hocking Hills Canopy Tours created treetop sky bridges and a series of secure cables for the attraction. Trained zip line guides adhere to safety guidelines and regulations. Beginners learn to zip line on a low training cable while learning the skills required for the higher zip line course.

Visitors to the Hocking Hills Canopy Tours are transported along a nearly two mile scenic journey to the course entrance. The zip line course features fie adventure sky bridges 10 zip lines and a rappel back to ground level. Also available along the trek are observation platforms. The friendly guides will share information on the native wildlife vegetations and local lore.

Hocking Hills Canopy Tours is designed as an outlet for the entire family. All zip liners have to be in reasonably good health, and the trained guides will teach visitors everything else they need to know for a day of safe adventure. All participants must sign a release waiver before touring the Hocking Hills Canopy attraction. Minors must have the waiver signed by a parent, or a copy of the parent's license with the signed waiver. Hocking Hills zip liners must wear closed toe shoes and be of average mobility. Children age 10 and older can utilize the Hocking Hills Canopy Tour zip line. Children who are ages 10-15 must be in the company of an adult, and be able to zip line on their own.

A 500-foot nature walk on unpaved trails must be completed before using the zip line. According to information available from Hocking Hills Canopy Tours, the trail walk is approximately as challenging as climbing up two flights of stairs. Pregnant women or individuals with heart, back, leg problems, or other serious conditions won't be allowed to participate in zip lining.

Regular Hocking Hills Canopy Tours tickets can be purchased for $85 per person. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, a "Kids Fly ½ Off" special is available with a paying adult ticket. Groups of eight or more qualify for special pricing. Tour guides accept tips, and a souvenir station is available. Reservations are strongly encouraged.
