St Xavier High School History

St Xavier High School is an all-male private school in Finneytown, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati, operated by the Chicago Province of the Society for Jesus. It is the largest Catholic high school in the Cincinnati area, with 1,500 enrolled students.

Once a part of St Xavier University, the high school became its own entity in 1919. In 1934 it was fully financially separate from the university. Originally the school was located in downtown Cincinnati but moved to Finneytown in 1960. These original Finneytown facilities were later town down and turned into a parking lot. In 2004 the school finished the construction of its football stadium. While the St X sports teams were originally named the Conquistadors or the Conquerors, today they are known as the Bombers.

St Xavier Football

St Xavier is well known for many of its sports programs. The Aquabombers, St Xavier's swim team, is the most decorated team. They have a natatorium they share with the Cincinnati Marlins. The school's football team is also well known. In 1999 the team appeared on Team Cheerios cereal boxes. They received their own football stadium in 2004, and went on the next year to win their first state championship following a perfect season and playoffs. While St X had never won the state championship, they had been the runners-up in 1992, 1998, and 2001.

St Xavier Football Alumni

The St Xavier football team has many players who have gone on to play professionally. Rocky Boiman of the 1998 team played with the Indianapolis Colts when they won Super Bowl XLI in 2007. Greg Frey, of the 1986 team, was starting quarterback for the Ohio State for three years. He is best known for two remarkable come-back wins. In 1988, during a game against the LSU Tigers, the Buckeyes were down 22-30. Frey rallied the team to a 36-32 victory. In 1989, in a game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Buckeyes were down 31-0. Frey threw 362 yards, helping his team win the game at 41-37emar Marshall is a former Bomber who began playing in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1999. He joined the Washington Redskins in 2001. Tom O'Brien, of the 1966 team, took the position of head coach at North Carolina State University in 2006. Prior to that he had been head coach at Boston College, where his team was ranked number on in the country by USA Today in 2005.
