He ranks number 68 on Rivals.com list of top receivers in the nation, and in the state of Ohio, is given the ranking of number 25 of 50 prospects. Scout.com ranks him the number 54 wide receiving recruit in the nation. In August 2006, The Cleveland Plain Dealer named him a player to watch and "one of the top wideouts, defensive backs and special-teams players in the seven-county area."
In May he attended the Nike football camp at Penn State and was cited as one of the highlights of the camp. In 2006, he also impressed scouts at the Elite Skills Camp in Cleveland.
He has had a number of offers from schools, including several from the Big Ten - Iowa, Michigan State, Indiana, and Penn State - and other schools like Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia. He is also interested in Ohio State and Michigan.
2006-2007 season
In the game against Solon, Woods scored a touchdown after receiving a 90-yard pass, although his team lost 27-13. When Strongsville played Mentor, he caught an 8-yard pass in the forth. The Mustangs lost the ball game 24-17. At the kickoff against Glenville, Woods caught a 41-yard return, but Strongsville lost 27-7. Playing Medina the next weekend, the Mustangs finally got a win after three losses with Wood scoring a touchdown on a 64-yard punt return in the third quarter. He also had four receptions for a total of 97 yards. The final score was 31-17. In the game against Elyria, which the team won 43-20, he caught a 44-yard pass and another for 60 yards that brought a touchdown for the Mustangs. In the game against North Royalton, D.J. Woods scored two touchdowns, and Strongsville won 35-21.
