Ohio's Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve is Perfect for Hiking
Natural Landmark is a Midwestern Treasure
Clifton Gorge is a unique natural feature -- a small canyon amongst the glacial till plains of West Central Ohio. Formed by a retreating glacier, the narrow gorge features a 50-foot tall cliff face through which the Little Miami River flows at speeds varying from rapid to tranquil.
Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve protects the gorge and surrounding area. The 268-acre site connects to John Bryan State Park and Antioch College's Glen Helen Nature Preserve, allowing hikers an unbroken wooded path from Clifton to Yellow Springs.
Hiking at Clifton Gorge
There are approximately three miles of hiking trails at Clifton Gorge. The Narrows Trail begins in Clifton, while the Rim and Gorge Trails are accessible from a parking lot off of Ohio State Route 343. All the trails in the preserve interconnect.
The trails are generally narrow and rocky, so bring quality footwear and expect to move aside from time to time if the trail is crowded.
The views are generally stunning, especially when the Little Miami River moves rapidly through the narrow gorge. Small waterfalls abound, with the Falls of the Little Miami being of special note. Overlooks dot the Narrows Trail allowing for quality photo opportunities.
The Gorge Trail runs next to the Little Miami and also sports interesting views of the northern cliff face and the occasional historic bridge. There used to be multiple mills along the river in the early 19th Century and evidence of their existence lurks amongst the nature.
Clifton, Yellow Springs and the Surrounding Area
The historic Clifton Mill is located down the street from the trail head for the Narrows Trail. The mill features a restaurant which is perfect for fueling up prior to hiking the gorge.
The hippie-enclave, Yellow Springs, is a few miles to the west, and as previously mentioned, it is possible to hike through Clifton Gorge, John Bryan State Park, and Glen Helen Preserve from Clifton to Yellow Springs. A host of shops and dining opportunities await.
Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve makes for an interesting hike with enough other things to do in the nearby area to make for an excellent Ohio day-trip.
