Ohio's Clifton Mill is a Destination for History and Dining
Early 19th Century Site Still Captivates Today
The narrow and scenic Clifton Gorge near the headwaters of Ohio's Little Miami River provides copious amounts of water power even today with its thunderous rapids. In the early 19th Century, the entrepreneurial spirit of pioneer Americans led to six water mills being built along the river's gorge near Clifton.
The Clifton Mill, one of those six, still stands today, providing both insight into early Ohio history and a hearty breakfast before an afternoon of hiking in Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve. It is located in Clifton, Ohio, south of Springfield and east of Dayton.
Uniquely Combining Ohio History and a Restaurant
First built in 1802, Clifton Mill ended up owned by Robert Patterson, father of founders of NCR. As recently as 1938, the mill provided electricity to the residents and businesses of nearby Cedarville and Yellow Springs as well as Clifton.
The current owners purchased and restored Clifton Mill, adding the Millrace restaurant and a unique gift shop that features the pancake mixes used in the restaurant in addition to the standard supply of country store wares.
The Millrace restaurant feature a quality breakfast and lunch, and dinner events are occasionally hosted. Beer tasting also takes place at the mill. The pancakes are the specialty of the restaurant, with the buckwheat variety being especially tasty.
Clifton Mill Christmas Lights
Clifton Mill's Christmas lights are legendary, with the Day-After-Thanksgiving lighting ceremony attracting thousands of visitors. Three and half million lights are used, turning the mill and surrounding area into a Christmas wonderland.
The Christmas display includes a miniature village focusing on recreations of historic Clifton buildings. A Christmas museum and gift shop are also part of the overall display. Hot dogs and cornbread are also served.
For anyone interested in early 19th Century American History, Clifton Mill is a must visit. The restaurant is also a nice break when combined with a hiking trip down Clifton Gorge. It is also a great stop after visiting nearby Cedar Bog, or the famous Crabill's Burgers in Urbana, Ohio.
