Oil: Mother Nature's Best Friend

It killed all of the fish, it slowly moved from the east to the west by the light breeze. It got driven south by the cold front and back north by a warm front. When people neared the beaches, they saw it. They saw a massive glob of dark ooze and they fell to their knees. It brought upon panic for the entire coastal community and it was deemed the biggest nature disaster the world had ever seen. It brought intense fear from the local fisherman, the national guards, the local communities, and the entire country. Soon it brought fear beyond the borders and became global. His name was Oil and he had just begun living life on the edge. No longer sheltered within the Earth, no longer a missing link from society but a free being who was viewed by millions. He was the center of attention, the epitome of fame, the one whom no one could ignore. When he crept toward the shore, people wept. When he killed precious sea life and endangered animals, people grew ill. When he threatened to shut down an entire industry just by spreading his arms a couple miles to the north, people called upon God for help.

There she was, not a god but rather a helper. She graced the covers of all the magazines twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. No one could avoid her. Why? The reason was that her fame was legendary. She had killed hundreds of thousands of people in just a year or two. She had been called every name in the book and scorn by millions. Sometimes people dared to challenge her and call upon her. Sometimes she answered, sometimes she stayed away, and sometimes she challenged them. She brought upon light, dark, rain, snow, sleet, hail, lightning, and thunder. When she was angry she shook the Earth, and when she has happy she celebrated with sunshine and seventy degree weather. During years of drought, she sometimes offered to help and during months of floods, she brought out the sun. Her name was Mother Nature and she had been alive for billions of years. She and him were the best of friends because only they could understand each other when others pitied them.

One morning Oil suffered a bout of depression and grew larger due to his tears. He had felt alone and hated by everyone. Nobody would talk to him, nobody wanted to look at him, and those who did go to him only did so to hurt him. They threw mud at him, they burned him, they dropped chemicals on him, and they poisoned him. On that one morning, he had felt so depressed that he couldn't take the isolation any more. What did society want from him, he was just living his life. On that morning, mother nature had heard him. She heard his tears and felt his pain. She decided to talk to him and ask him if there was anything she could do to help. He told her that he didn't want to feel like an outcast and he didn't want to be hurt anymore. She told him to hide into the Earth to avoid the pain from others but he didn't know how to do that. They talked for hours that day while more animals were dying out and the smell in the air became impossible to bear. She looked at all he had killed. She saw the animals lying in the warm yet pitch black waters, she saw the people near the shore weeping, she saw thousands of signs that wanted Oil gone. Soon she grew angry and couldn't take it any more. Her best friend was in pain and he was being blamed for doing something that he hadn't done. Oil was innocent and Mother Nature couldn't take his pain anymore. She wanted revenge for those that had hurt him and she wanted to hurt those that had hurt him. It was they who had brought him from within the Earth and caused chaos. It was them who messed with the Earth and Mother Nature who had caused the murders of thousands of endangered species. They were angry at him but they should have been angry at themselves. Her day would soon arrive and her vengeance would soon scorn those who had opposed her.

A few weeks later, Oil had grown even larger and the hatred towards him was limitless. His deep depression grew exponentially as did his girth. Soon, however, everything would change. In the morning, all was quiet, not a gust of wind to be heard. That morning the sun was shining ever so brightly and the birds flew over Oil. His darkness was enveloped by the sun and he nearly glistened. A few hours later, the sun was gone, the winds had picked up and the waves increased. Oil had felt a little bit seasick and accidentally threw up to his west. As the hours continued to pass, the waves continued to increase and the winds continued to pick up. Soon, the sky was completely cloudy and the winds began to roar. Oil began to look to his north, his east, and his west but there was nothing there. The people who were throwing rocks and chemicals at him were no longer to be found. In fact the people that had surrounded him the past few weeks were completely gone. He was all alone or so he thought. Shortly after, he heard someone yell and he once again looked to the north, the east, and the west. A moment later, the yell told him to look to his south. When he turned towards the south, there she was. It was his best friend Mother Nature moving towards him. When she drew closer, she told him to close his eyes. When he asked why, she told him that he shouldn't worry and that all of his problems will be solved. He had closed his eyes. First for a minute, than an hour, than twelve hours, than a day, and finally she told him to open his eyes.

When he opened his eyes, he couldn't believe what had happened. No longer did he see the dark sea all around him but rather stores, street lights, signs, buildings, schools, and hospitals. After a few minutes of shock, he asked her what happened. She looked at him and said that he had destroyed dozens of communities. He had polluted every building he touched and he had not only killed thousands of animals, but dozens of people as well. His shock continued to grow and he started to get angry at her. He asked her why she made him do those awful things. Oil never intended to do so much harm and destruction, he was just trying to live his life. Mother Nature knew he was angry at her but she also knew her purpose. After he had calmed down, she told him that he didn't kill anybody. She told him that he didn't destroy the buildings, that he didn't wipe out the coastal communities and that he never hurt anybody. After she told him all of this, he asked her that if he didn't do it, than who did. During a brief moment of silence and a modest sigh, she told him that everybody did this. He couldn't understand what she meant by that.

"I did it, you did it, they did it, we all did it. You killed the oceans, I killed the beaches, you pollute the air and kill the animals, I hurt and kill people and animals. Why? Because we are nature and we live how we are supposed to live but they don't want us to. Since they want us to stop, they kill the oceans, they kill the beaches, they kill the animals, they kill the people, and they kill nature," sighs Mother Nature.
