When you turn down the lane to the Grassmarket, you will pass by many shops, including clothing stores and little food shops. However, it can be argued that none are quite as eye-opening as Oink. With a scrumptious-looking roasted pig lying just near the display window for all to see, it is very likely that passersby will stop and take a look at what this shop has to offer.
The menu is basically two different items. You can either get a hog roast roll, or you can get a crackling hog roast roll. Start by choosing your bread. In general, you can choose white or brown bread. You are then given the option to add sage and onion. In some cases, you may be able to add haggis instead of sage and onion. You can also try both, but this is not recommended. Next you can add apple sauce or chilli relish. Both are light and sweet and compliment the roasted pork nicely.
After going down the line of traditional condiments, the roasted pork is added by the staff. The pork is taken from the pig on display. A generous amount is always added in your roll.
Once the pork is added to your roll, you may ask for crackling, which is also taken from the roasted pig on display. For those of you new to the term "crackling", this basically refers to the crispy roasted skin of the pork. They can be difficult to chew, but contain a lot of flavor and make a fun cracking sound when you successfully bite off a piece. Crackling costs extra but can be worth it if you enjoy chewing on some more pork.
Drink options include anything from bottled water to hot chocolate to coffee. There is a fridge in the shop from which you can pick out drinks, or have the staff make you a nice hot cup of Joe.
Oink offers student discounts for students from any Edinburgh university. Discount is taken upon presentation of student identification from any Edinburgh university. The discount entitles the customer to around 10% off of the order.
Oink also offers a catering service from 50 to 500 people. Along with carved hog roasts, Oink also serves lambs and joints of beef as part of the catered service.
If you like the taste of pork, you must visit Oink and try a hog roast or two. Oink is open 7 days a week, opening at 11am everyday.
