Fast forward three years, and now my hair is all natural. Within the first few months of being relaxer free, I decided to use the Ojon on my TWA (teeny weenie afro). I used it the same way I had when I relaxed - I applied it all over my dry hair, saturating it, kept it on for half an hour, and then I shampooed it out.
Basically the results were ok, my hair only felt slightly more moisturized, but it was nothing to write home about, so I decided not to take the extra time to do more treatments. That was two years ago and since that time the Ojon Restorative Treatment has sat in my refrigerator.
A couple of weeks ago I read a book on African American hair and learned that hundreds of years ago my African ancestors used to moisturize and style their hair with palm oil. I remembered that one of Ojon's main ingredients was palm oil, so I was inspired to try the Restorative Hair Treatment again.
Price of
Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment
A 5oz jar costs $55.
Ingredients in
Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment
It contains palm oil, prunus Africana bark extract, serenoa serrulata fruit extract, lecithin, citronelol, linalool, tocopherol, ascorbyl palmitate, citric acid, & parfum.
Scent of
Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment
It has a very strong smoky, earthy, tobacco like odor that overpowers the hair. I'm not a big fan of it.
Texture of
Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment
When it's stored in the refrigerator the product becomes solid and hard so it comes with a comb that allows it to be scooped out. At room temperature it becomes a thick, slightly pasty oil. I like the fact that even though it's oily, it absorbs really well into the skin and hair and it doesn't leave behind a greasy feel.
Even after two years my jar was still in really good condition, it was a bit more watery than normal and the scent had died down a lot, but that was only because someone opened the lid months ago and didn't close it back properly. I'm sure if the lid had been kept on the treatment would have had the same consistency as when I first bought it.
Results After Using
Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment
I allowed the oil to melt at room temperature and then I applied a dab of it to small sections of my wet hair before twisting each section.
My hair absorbed most of it fairly quickly and it made each section feel slightly softer, but it instantly made each section feel smoother, silkier and less frizzy. It also gave me incredible shine, my hair was literally shinier than it's ever been, relaxed or natural. And once my strands dried they had a lot of hold and didn't feel oily or weighed down.
The best thing I found about using this oil though, was that the results lasted for a week. My twists usually begin to get loose, dry and frizzy around three days after I oil and style them. But by using Ojon my hair retained its hold, shine and smoothness for about 8 days without me touching or adding anything else to them during that time.
And when I finally took the twists out on the 9th day, I noticed that they were still rather moisturized and hydrated. If I had used another oily product, my hair would've been bone dry after 9 days. So I was really amazed.
I was also happy to find that my when I used it again the results seemed to be even better.
In the End...
I'm so glad I pulled this product out of my frig and actually used it again, it has infused my dry coarse strands with moisture and left it feeling silkier and looking so much shinier. I will use it at least twice a month to do styles that require hold or whenever I want to add shine.
I totally recommend it for coarse & dry kinky curly textures, just make sure not to wash it out, it works extremely well as a leave in.
