Oklahoma Albertson's Stores Sold, Some Closing

On June 19th, 2007 Albertson's LLC announced major changes to its marketing - exiting the state of Oklahoma. Some stores will be sold, others closed.

Statewide, according to News Examiner-Enterprise, 23 stores will be sold and 3 closed. The sales are expected to complete in July 2007. The Albertson's name will be retained until the deals complete. At that time the name is expected to change, but no name was given at the present time. Four different retailers will be splitting the spoils: RPCS Inc. of Missouri, Homeland Inc. of Edmond, Williams Discount Food of Tuttle, Reasor's Inc. of Tahlequah. These properties will be RPCS's first in Oklahoma.

According to Tulsa World, seven stores will be sold and two closed in the Tulsa area. Reasor's is buying two locations. RPCS Inc. of Missouri is buying six stores in Tulsa and one in Bartlesville, one in Ponca City and one in Stillwater. The two that will be closed are located at North Pine Street and Peoria Avenue and in Owasso.

Edmond-based Homeland Inc. will be buying 3 locations in Oklahoma City, two in Norman, one in Bethany and one in Muskogee. This acquisition will give Homeland 69 stores in the area, with 51 in Oklahoma.

Williams Discount Food is buying two Oklahoma City locations as well as one in Yukon, one in Edmond whose name will change to "Williams Discount Food" according to Alice Collingsworth of the Edmond Sun, one in Del City and one in Midwest City.

Tulsa World reports that "Albertson's LLC said they expect the new owners to retain most of the current employees. Workers at closed stores will be able to interview for openings at other locations. Eligible employees who are not retained will be given severance."

The word on the street is this will be good for consumers who have been dissatisfied with Albertson's overall because of high prices. Albertson's is typically known for a good selection of very expensive items; however, most consumers opt for lower prices of common items. Perhaps a balance of selection and good price will finally be available.

Other opinions are not so positive. According to another Tulsa World article, Tulsa's "Mayor Kathy Taylor is responding immediately to the announcement" due to the northern store closing citing a "quality of life and health issue." A consultant was brought in to study the products and services demand of the area in hopes of bringing in new retailers. Business owners in the area will be affected and are concerned as are most of those who focus on Oklahoma's future.

No changes at this time are expected in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas stores; however, Albertson's LLC is selling its Fort Worth distribution center to Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) a cooperative that includes RPCS, Homeland, Williams Discount Foods and Reasor's.
