Oklahoma City Attacks with 15 Years of Retrospect

SDR2010
There is a lot of talk about terror in the world today because of the 9-11 attacks in New York and Washington. The thing that made those terrorist attacks so unique and frightening was that they took place on domestic soil. During most wars the only people to give their life for America were serving in the military. The people on the home soil were safe but this was not the case with the 9-11 attacks. People were so shocked because it was something we did not expect. This was also the case with the Oklahoma City bombing that took place on April 19, 1995. The bombing was a bomb attack on the Alfred P. Murrah federal building committed by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols.

According to the Oklahoma City website, 168 Americans died in the bombing on that tragic day 15 years ago. I remember this bombing 15 years ago, and I was with my cousin working at the Red Cross in New York. What I remember most is that the entire staff was sobbing and frantically attempting to call their family members in Oklahoma City to see if they were safe. Even worker that did not have family in Oklahoma City were calling their family non-stop to be sure that they were safe and alive. I remember the fear of that day and hoping that nobody would ever have to go through that experience again. All of the workers at the Red Cross were crying and holding each other. We were watching the coverage live on CNN and hoping they would find the men that did this. I cried that did and hoped I would never feel this danger again. I remember thinking about the people that could do this and how horrible these people were. This is a feeling that I felt again during the 9-11 attacks in New York. According to Attack On America, these attacks resulted in over 6,000 deaths and many are still missing. I remember watching the 9-11 attacks on CNN while attending school in New York. I still remember this feeling today and this is the reason I have not become most desensitized to terrorism, I do not believe the world has become desensitized either. The world has become a more dangerous place today and many people still worry about this. The deadly attack on 9-11 shows that terrorism today is resulting in a more dangerous and deadly world.

Most of all, I remember the students crying and everyone running out of the classrooms while they tried to frantically call their family. The lines wouldn't connect and everyone was holding each other and crying for the fear that someone in their family was now gone. The experience of both attacks was the same because they were domestic attacks and I realized that day that the world is a more dangerous today than ever. The Oklahoma City attacks were a horrible experience and 15 years later I can only reflect and know the world is more dangerous today. In 1995 168 people were killed and in 2001 6,000 people were killed, this shows that the world is more dangerous today then previously. I believe as technology advances so does terrorism and it gains the ability to become more deadly. I believe the world has not become desensitized to terrorism because political scientists have shown a relationship between terrorism and voting choice for President. I have also not become desensitized because I remember those crying workers and classmates from years ago and i see their faces in my sleep.
