When many people think of Oklahoma, images of cowboys and rodeos are likely in mind. True enough, Oklahoma has a proud cowboy heritage, but there is more going on in Oklahoma than campfires and cattle drives-and one of those "other" things is the Oklahoma Zoo Amphitheater. Musical acts ranging from Judas Priest to Willie Nelson have performed at the Oklahoma Zoo Amphitheater in the past; the 2009 concert schedule for the Amphitheater has an equally wide range of artists who will be performing.

The Oklahoma Zoo Amphitheater was built during the Depression by the civilian conservation corps. The opening act for the venue was "The Circus of 21 Death-Defying Acts," as the Amphitheater's history relates. Use of the structure came and went over the decades, but in recent years the Zoo Amphitheater has developed into a popular events location-in fact, it was voted the #1 concert venue by readers of "The Oklahoman" newspaper.

The 2009 concert schedule was kicked off on May 8 with bands Korn, Slipknot and The Used, then Alan Jackson and Josh Turner on May 16. Scheduled after these appearances are: May 29-Discorus, Festival of Rock-with nine acts, including Buckcherry, Shinedown and Halestorm ; May 30-The Legends of Funk-with the three acts of The Bar-Kays, SOS Band and Con-Funk-Shun ; June 6-Reo Speedwagon, Styx and 38 Special ; August 22-Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago ; August 28-Jackson Browne ; September 11-Sugarland and Billy Currington.

Seating at the Amphitheater includes traditional seating in the half round and general admission tickets allow concert-goers to sit in the greens, or lawn, area. The entire seating area is open air, making it a unique experience for music fans in the Oklahoma City area. Advance tickets may be purchased at any of the Buy For Less stores in the metropolitan Oklahoma City area or online.

If coming from out-of-town to enjoy one or more of the concerts, Oklahoma City has plenty of other places and activities to keep a family or an adult(s) happily busy. Other locations to consider might be the Oklahoma City Zoo -voted one of the top ten family-friendly zoos in the country, the Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum , any of the shops and restaurants in trendy Bricktown, or perhaps take in a AA Division baseball game in the downtown home of the Redhawks.
