Oklahoma City Thunder: The Best of the Worst

OKC Thunder Joe Smith Contract Buyout is Puzzling; Or is It?

D.M. Davison
Recent news around the Oklahoma City Thunder might have some folks scratching their heads as Sam Presti, General Manager of the OKC NBA franchise, announced the team's decision to buy out veteran player Joe Smith's contract. This coming on the heels of a disappointment for the OKC fans when the New Orleans Hornets player Tyson Chandler failed his physical. At this point fans might wonder, "What are they thinking?"

Presti's experience in player personnel and scouting is showing, so is his courage. He has created a well balanced team of young talent - Durant, Green and Westbrook - and experienced veterans - Desmond Mason, Chucky Atkins and Malik Rose - while keeping well under the Thunder salary cap, and putting the franchise in a very lucrative position for future draft picks. What is he thinking? Longevity and exciting basketball. The OKC fans agree and are excited about their team's performance as shown by consistent sell out crowds. And they show their enthusiasm. One tradition carried over from the two seasons shared with the Hornets has maintained its place with OKC fans. All the fans stand when the team enters the stadium and stay on their feet until the first basket. Talk about thunder. Fans hope the new mascot, Rumble the Bison, keeps up with fan energy.

In spite of the recent injury of Kevin Durant, Thunder players maintained a tough opposition as seen in Saturday's win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Even though they tie with Washington for next to the last in NBA standings, each having 14 wins and 45 losses for the season, the difference in scores in twenty five games this season was determined by 6 points or less and 8 of those by two points or less: the Thunder winning 4 out of the 25. If they start to win even half of their close games, the cellar will turn into a faint memory.

The team found strength against the Grizzlies from the rest of its bench as well. Newcomer Thabo Sefolosha grabbed 15 points while Nenad Krstic gained 10. Nick Collison nabbed 5 offensive rebounds out of 9 and scored 8 points. The team continues to improve defensively while struggling to close successfully, but with close calls like those mentioned and a very young team guided by seasoned vets...let the Thunder roll.

Good reading and unusual for this writer. The authors short stories have a following. Check them out.

Being in the cellar definitely has its advantages as no one on the 'top' is even aware of what is going on 'down there' and will most likely not be prepared for the 'lake to turn over', thus, putting the 'bottom' on the 'top'....which always happens...eventually. Hang in there, Thunder. Keep dribbling. I love underdogs.
