Oklahoma State Gets a Cold Shoulder from the BCS

So the Nebraska Cornhuskers had big plans on closing out the Big 12 era by winning the final conference championship and defeating the Oklahoma Sooners. It would've been a storybook ending for Nebraska, as they're ditching the conference after this season to join up with the Big Ten. Also, Colorado is bailing out to become a member of the Pac 10. So how did the 2010 Big 12 Championship end?

About the same way it has the last few times OU and Nebraska locked up. Nebraska lost. Here's my problem with this whole issue. Anybody that knows me knows that I'm a life-long, die-hard Oklahoma State fan. So I was overly disappointed to see that the Sooners walked into Stillwater and slammed the door on the Cowboys' bid to finally get into a conference title game.

I did some research on the Big 12, since its inception in 1996. According to Wikipedia, some combination of OU or Nebraska has been in every conference championship game with the exception of 2001 and 2005. In those two years, Colorado and Texas were in the championship game. Outside of that, it's been overrun by the Sooners and Cornhuskers.

So did I watch the 2010 Big 12 Championship? Sure, I did. I just didn't expect much from it. To me, it was a like a bad sequel to an already horrible movie. You get a change in cast members, but it was the same result as the last time they met in 2006. Sooners get the win, the difference being they went onto get rocked in overtime at the Fiesta Bowl by Boise State. There's another team that will be in the BCS National Championship game in the next couple of years, you can bank on it. By the way, Nebraska got beat by Auburn at the Cotton Bowl that year. Guess where OSU ended up? They WON their bowl game, something OU and Nebraska couldn't get done on their own. They went to the Independence Bowl and clipped a very tough Alabama team.

No, Oklahoma will not be involved in the BCS Title game this year. Believe me, I can live with that. It just saddens me that the final game in the Big 12 before the realignment will more than likely see the same results. OU will more than likely head to the Alamo Bowl to tangle with the Arizona Wildcats, and Nebraska will fall off to some irrelevant bowl game, like "Jim-Bob's Discount Auto Parts Bowl" and get systematically dissected.

As for Oklahoma State, the tough loss at home against Oklahoma knocked them out of the BCS picture and will they will now get one of the secondary bowl games. But coming from a die-hard Cowboys fan, here's hoping for another repeat, where OSU wins their bowl game and both OU and Nebraska get housed in their respective games.
