Oklahoma University Football Top Three Teams

Sooner Football - the Best Teams Ever

Beverly Bright
The Oklahoma University Football program was started in the year of 1985, before Oklahoma became a state. One game was played and lost. Since then, the Oklahoma University Football program has progressed to being one of the more dominate football programs in the United States. Nothing defines the competitive success of a college football program like a national championship. OU is one of the very few programs that have a reasonable chance each fall, to set out with the expectation and goal of pursuing the national crown. Oklahoma Sooners have claimed more national championships than any other Big 12 program. Seven championships total, 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, 1985, and the latest in 2000. OU is looking to make 2008 the number eight. Prior to the 2008 season and the formation of the BCS (Bowl Championship Series), the best teams of the Oklahoma University Sooner Football program were:

1975:

As the defending national champions, the OU team entered the season with the nation's longest winning streak at 20 games, and had not lost in the last 29 contests. Coached by Barry Switzer, the team ended the year with an 11-1 overall record, losing only to Kansas. Winning the Conference Title, the bowl game ensured the team was voted as the National Champions for 1975. This team produced eight All-Americans, Lee Roy Selmon-Defensive Tackle, Dewey Selmon-Noseguard, Terry Webb-Guard, Mike Vaughan-Tackle, Billy Brooks-split End, and Joe Washington-Halfback.

1985:

Coached by Barry Switzer and quarterbacked by Jamelle Holieway, this team ended the season with a winning record 11-1 overall, losing only to Miami Hurricanes in Norman. Quarterback Troy Aikman was injured in the second quarter and true freshman Jamelle Hollieway finished the game and the season. Vinny Testaverde quarterbacked the Hurricanes to a 27-14 upset over OU. The OU team went on to win the Conference Title, the bowl game and was voted the National Champions for the year. This team produced three All-Americans, Brian Bosworth-Linebacker, Tony Casillas-Noseguard and Kevin Murphy-Defensive End.

2000:

The 2000 OU team started the season with second year head coach Bob Stoops. Coming from a losing season in 1999, OU had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Quarterbacked by runner-up Heisman Trophy candidate, Josh Heupel, the team finished the season with an overall record of 13-0. OU won the Big 12 Championship Game in Kansas City and the BCS National Championship in the Orange Bowl. This team produced three All-Americans, Rocky Calmun-Linebacker, Josh Heupel-Quarterback and J.T. Thatcher-Free Safety. Oklahoma University was the undisputed National Champions.

Conclusion-2008:

Since the introduction of the BCS in 1998, no team has played in more BCS bowl games than the Oklahoma Sooners. The 2008 football team already has the best statistics of any OU team and may be the very best team ever. This team has produced the National Heisman Trophy winner, Sam Bradford-Quarterback. One All-American has been named, Duke Robinson-Offensive Lineman. The team finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-1 and captured the Conference Championship title. Oklahoma University will play Florida for the National Title on January 8, 2009.

The Oklahoma University has a long legacy of outstanding performances. Team Honors are 7 National Championships (hopefully 8 in January, 2009), 42 conference Titles, 6 Big 12 Conference Titles, 42 Bowl appearances and ranked 7.39 in the average AP ranking (No. 1 in the Nation).

Players Honors are 146 All-Americans, 439 First Team All-Conference, 5 Heisman Trophy Winners, 334 NFL Draft Picks, 37 First Round NFL Picks, 2 Pro Football Hall of Fame are among the many awarded over the years.

On January 8, 2009 we will finalize the 2008 season of the Oklahoma University Football program. We wait.............
