COMMENTARY | If anyone deserves the award of Mother of the Year, it is Sarah Dawn McKinley of Blanchard, Okla. She proved why there is a 2nd Amendment to the Constitution when she defended herself and her baby from two intruders.
As Rich Lowry of the National Review relates it, McKinley was in her rural home outside of Oklahoma City, alone with her baby due to the fact that her husband had died of lung cancer a few months before. When two men attempted to break in her door, she blockaded the door with a couch, put a bottle in her crying baby's mouth, and then armed herself. Then she called the 9/11 dispatcher and asked for help. Because there are only three sheriff's deputies covering 12,000 square miles in McKinley's area, no one could get to her soon.
Then McKinley asked the dispatcher if it would be alright if she were to shoot the intruders. Even though Oklahoma allows one to use deadly force against home invaders, the dispatcher was somewhat vague as to the law. However she did advise McKinley to do what she needed to do to defend her baby.
Which she did, shooting dead one Justin Martin as he entered her home with a knife. His accomplice fled and was later apprehended by law enforcement.
Mind, it would have been better all around if McKinley had shot at her attackers even if Oklahoma did not allow it. There is an old saying, after all, that it is better to be judged by 12 than to be buried by six.
Another Sarah, a more famous one named Palin, weighed in on the incident in a note to the National Review. "I love that young woman. I'm all in favor of girls with guns who know their purpose. She fulfilled a purpose of the Second Amendment. I'd advise my own daughters to do the same. This mom protected an innocent life. Kudos to the 911 dispatcher, too." Palin knows a a few things about female empowerment through superior firepower.
There is an old saying that God made man, but Mr. Colt (he of the 45 caliber revolver) made man equal. McKinley proved that applied to women as well. Absent a gun and the willingness to use it, she would have stood a pretty good chance of being dead at the hands of a pair of assailants who were high on prescription pain pills. Instead she and her baby is alive and the gene pool is lighter of one potential rapist/murderer.
