Artisttia Yarns
As fall approaches and autumn leaves swirl down around you, do your thoughts turn towards Oktoberfest recipes? Have you ever gone to an Oktoberfest and wondered how to make those delectable bratwurst sandwiches? Here is how to make them and keep them hot in your crock-pot to have after a rowdy football game.

Oktoberfest Bratwurst Sandwiches

8 bratwursts (approximately 2 lbs)

2 T olive oil

2 T minced garlic cloves

1 large red onion sliced into rings

3 granny smith or tart cooking apples cored and sliced into rings

1 c. beer (preferably a dark German beer)

1 c. cider or apple juice

2 T flour

1 t nutmeg

Directions:

  1. Heat olive oil in skillet, add bratwurst and brown.
  2. Add onions and garlic, cook until translucent.
  3. Coat onions, garlic and bratwurst in flour and nutmeg, remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Place apple in bottom of crock pot.
  5. Place cooked bratwurst, onions, and garlic on top of apples.
  6. Pour beer and cider/apple juice over mixture.
  7. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
  8. Serve on hot dog rolls.

This meal is tasty with German Potato Salad, roasted brussel sprouts and traditional German filled cookies called Hoernchen, which means little horns. Please see my other recipes for instructions on how to make these other goodies.
