OLD ADAGES

Or Pearls of Wisdom

J.C. JORDAN
Old Adages

Adages are usually short sayings or words of wisdomthat came about through someone's personal experience. They are often referred to as proverbs. They have been passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth for a very long time. They are meant to be learned from and to inspire us.

I can remember my parents using many of these "pearls of wisdom" when I was a child and I in turn used many of them with my children. Many young people today don't even know what an adage is. It's just a shame that much of this wisdom will be lost if we don't pass it along so below are all the old adages that I could think of. As you read them you may recall hearing them or using them yourself.

Birds of a feather flock together

Don't judge a book by its cover.

The early bird gets the worm.

Better late than never.

You are never too old to learn.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

A rolling stone gathers no moss.

Stop and smell the roses.

He who hesitates is lost.

Look before you leap.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Better safe than sorry.

Curiosity killed the cat.

What you don't know won't hurt you.

Seek and ye shall find.

Two heads are better than one.

Too many cooks spoil the broth.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

Every do has his day.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Penny wise pound foolish.

Don't cry over spilt milk.

All that glitters isn't gold.

Don't put the horse before the cart

And last but not least.....

When the going gets tough the tough get going.

well said. I've heard them all quite frequently growing up and said all but three to my three kids:)
