Old Fashioned Apple Crumb Pie

From My Family's Yankee Kitchen

Ellery Bailey

Great old New England cooks knew that simple cooking made the best comfort food. This Yankee recipe, passed down from my great-grandmother, is so easy and quick to prepare - plus everyone loves the sweet and crunchy crumbs on the apple pie!

After just 6 easy steps you will have a pie that will delight your friends and family.

Pie Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tbs flour
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 4 cups sliced apples (peel removed; granny smith or other baking apples)
  • 1 deep dish frozen pie crust/shell

Topping Ingredients (this can be doubled)

  • ½ cup flour
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine (softened)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar (firmly packed)

Preheat oven and baking sheet to 400 degrees F.

In a large bowl, combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well.

Add apple slices and gently mix until all apples are coated evenly. Spoon into pie shell.

In a small bowl, combine flour, butter or margarine, and brown sugar using a fork. Mix until crumbly.

Sprinkle mixture evenly over apples.

Place pie on baking sheet and bake uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes. Allow to cool for 1 hour before serving. Serve with whipped topping or ice cream if desired.
