Owned by George Treese, Old Geezers Mantiques sits near one end of Main Street in downtown Weston. According to Treese, the idea for the store came about 10 years ago. Think "man" plus "antiques." At first, antiques were sought out by the owner, but through the years, things have changed. "Now, we have regulars who do our shopping for us. They find collectibles they would like to sell us so that we can pass them on to the people who shop at our store," Treese said in a personal interview.
The name of the store hints that the establishment is geared towards men. It is true that Old Geezers Mantiques has plenty for men to get excited about. There is the tool room, where they can pick through all kinds of old farm tools, such as they may have seen on grandfather's farm. They might like to check out the two-hand cross cut saw made for lumberjacks of old. Here they can also find a frontier hand axe like they have read about in western or history books.
The business has attracted not only men, but women and children as well. In fact, Treese wants to make it clear that he welcomes everyone. "The store is set up so children can have a good time. They can touch lots of the items and we explain everything in here. They really have a good time when they visit," Treese explained.
At the same time, there are just as many antiques at the store for women as there are for men. Sparkling glassware winks down from the shelves. Well preserved photos of long ago people in old fashioned clothing sit with their folders open, ready to be discovered and bought. Old Geezers Mantiques is definitely not a boring place for women.
A short day trip from Kansas City, Weston's Mantiques offers family fun for everyone. Some of the items will be interesting to all the family members. Take for example the large collection of old license plates from states around the country. This kind of interest in the country's states appeals to the young and old, and to men and women both. Dozens of coin books filled with old or rare coins are interesting to collectors no matter who they are. Antique signs and pictures grace the walls, ready for purchase. At Old Geezers Mantiques, "If you don't see it, ask," George Treese says.
Mantiques is a fine place for a family outing whether it is on a day trip from Kansas City or a part of a cross country vacation. Just look to the end of Weston's Main Street and there it sits, quietly, humbly waiting for all the men, women and children who are looking for an interesting and unique antiquing experience.
