Introduction
This herb is what in traditional eastern medicine is known as "cure all" or "treat all diseases" herb. It is not used for a specific disease but instead is used to give the patient an overall boost in his (or her) self-defense immune mechanism. The properties of this Indian ginseng herb have been known for more than five thousand years, but now a group of researchers have presented a study made to scientifically test the benefits of Ashwagandha.
The Study
Scientists were able to enroll 5 healthy volunteers and peform blood tests specifically designed to examine the immune levels of their bodies. while volunteers took 6 ml of a water extract of Ashwagandha mixed with a 250 mL of cows' milk twice a day on a daily basis . Immune cells were quantified at twenty-four and ninety-six hours after initial blood tests (baseline).
The Research Leader
Dr. Heather Zwickey of the National College of Natural Medicine's Helfgott Research Institute embarked on this small study to prove that Ashwagandha mixed with cow's milk is good for your body.
Results
The results of this study were significant in supporting the idea that the ancient herb Ashwagandha, mixed with cow's milk, has a definite effect on the immune system cell count. Results showed that taking Ashwagandha mixed with cow's milk increases the overall level of white cells as well as increases specific white cells that protect you against the threats of foreign bodies.
Final Thoughts
Recently, other herbs such as Echinacea and Astragalus have been extensively researched for improvement of the immune system. This study shows that India gingsenf (Ashwagandha) may help. However, before going and buying this herb, you should probably consider seeing a naturopathic doctor that will better counsel you on this and many other herbal remedies.
