Some in old media (newspapers) are going quietly. They are simply closing up shop. Some, however, are going out with all guns blaring (Fox News Channel). Net citizens watch as these aging behemoths take their final breaths. It is embarrassing to watch as many of the people involved in old media don't know that they are being left behind. It is likely that many of them are from a generation where the centralization of information was the norm. The new generation distains this form of media and is now taking upon themselves what old media will not do; report the truth. Of course there will be specks of propaganda sites across the web run by fringe people, but at least we will have a vast number of points of information. From this we can form our own opinion, instead of having opinions formed for us by old corrupt editors sitting in a smoky room.
The democratization of information has exposed the cheats, the frauds, and the liars. Bought and paid for old media can no longer get by with their sound bites and biased "journalism". In fact most people trust the old media less than they do the blogosphere. People now go online to find the latest headlines. Many people are only going to old media sites on the net to see examples in fraudulent journalism or to see an actual war against journalism such as the one being waged by Fox News. Don't get me wrong the leftist old media stations are just as corrupt as Fox but the recent smear campaign of Ron Paul by Fox showed America the ultimate face of old media corruption.
So, where do we go from here? I say that we go forward with progress. Dismantle the old propaganda machines and use their examples in history books as what good citizens should seek to avoid. The 2008 presidential election cycle will go down as a major battle between the people on the net and dying media in the other corner. I for one will not miss old media when it dies. I gladly welcome the power of the people over the powerful few.
