Remakes are often scorned as being inferior to the films on which their based, but now you can decide for yourself, using the original movie trailers and comparing them with the movie trailers for the remakes. You can watch all the old movie trailers in this collection for free without downloads.
Old Movie Trailers - Remakes Edition
Check out these old movie trailers and see which films you'd rather watch, the original or the remake.
Death Race/ Death Race 2000
The original movie was a Roger Corman low-budget flick released in 1975 starring David Carradine and a then-unknown Sylvester Stallone. Stallone would make a slightly bigger impact with his next movie - another low-budget film called Rocky.

The Omega Man/ I Am Legend
Based on the 1954 novel, I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson, The Omega Man was released in 1971 starring Charlton Heston, who had starred in such famous remakes as The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur.

While we're talking about Charlton Heston, let's move to a planet where man is the lowest order of living things...
Planet of the Apes (1968)/ (2001)
Based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle, who had also written The Bridge over the River Kwai. The original was directed by Franklin J Schaffner, who also directed Patton a couple years later. The original film garners three Oscars and became an international phenomenon spawning sequels, comic books and a television series. The remake by Tim Burton was not a critical success. Judge for yourself which you'd rather see based on the trailers.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)/ (1978)/ Body Snatchers (1993)/ The Invasion (2007)
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then this movie has been flattered very well indeed with three remakes of the original Don Seigel directed classic from 1956. Siegel would go on to direct Dirty Harry and many more classic films. This entire series of films is based on the novel, The Body Snatchers, written in 1954 by Jack Finney.

The Big Clock/ No Way Out
Here was a unique one I thought might be of interest. Kevin Costner takes the place of Ray Milland in the remake of this classic suspense thriller from 1948.

The Shop Around the Corner/ You've Got Mail
The 1940 classic directed by Ernst Lubitsch was inspired by a Hungarian play written by Miklos Laszlo. This play was also remade as the film, In the Good Old Summertime; however, we'll focus on the Lubitsch classic and the 1998 Nora Ephron version, You've Got Mail starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory/ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Based on the 1964 Roald Dahl novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the original movie came out in 1971. The title was changed partially because of the war in Vietnam and the slang term, Charlie, to depict the enemy. Tim Burton directed his second remake (the earlier one being Planet of the Apes) with his 2005 version.

King Kong (1933)/ (1976)/ (2005)
Science-fiction films seem to lend themselves to being remade. The reasons are numerous, but chief among them is that the films can be remade to take advantage of advances in special effects, which lend classic stories a new, updated look. A perfect example is King Kong, with its large scale animatronic effects from the 1976 remake to its CGI incarnations in Peter Jackson's 2005 remake.
Compare the trailers to these three to see which version is best.

Lolita (1962)/ (1997)
How did they ever make a movie of Lolita? Kubrick answered that question the first time, Adrian Lyne answered it in the remake.

Yet another science-fiction movie remade with updated effects, judge for yourself whether the original 1951 version holds up to John Carpenter's 1982 remake.

Psycho (1960)/ (1998)
While most remakes try to differentiate themselves from their originals, the 1998 remake of the 1960 Hitchcock classic attempts to be unique by being the same, with director Gus Van Zant shooting a virtual shot-for-shot version of the original.

War of the Worlds (1953)/(2005)
Steven Spielberg jumped on the remake bandwagon with the 2005 release of the 1953 original, War of the Worlds. Both are based on the novel by H.G. Wells.

Ocean's Eleven
Some concepts are too good to pass up. Take a group of high-profile stars, put them together to pull off the heist of the century. It worked for Ol' Blue Eyes, Dino and Sammy Davis Jr. and worked again with a new generation of stars.
If you haven't seen the original, check out this movie clip to see Sinatra, Lawford, Martin and Davis Jr. in action. Then compare the trailers old and new.

Interesting, thanks.
Excellent, people should know about this. I love the cult classic omega man!
Fun stuff! Nice to see you!
Thanks for the comments! I'd considered including Little Shop of Horrors and several others, but the article was running a bit long.
Interesting article.
"The Shop Around the Corner/ You've Got Mail" The original is a classic. The remake is complete shite. I like the remake Little Shop of Horrors.
Interesting article! I haven't watched all the trailers yet, but I'm finding so far I like both versions. I found that surprising because I went in with the mindset that the old was obviously the better movie.
