Old Navy Jeans: Review of Missus and Women's Sizes

Carol Wilkins
Old Navy carries stylish and often good quality clothing at decent prices. So when it came time for me to buy jeans again, I tried several styles, sizes and fits to find that elusive perfect pair of jeans. Thanks to gym workouts, I am losing weight however I am still right in an awkward size. I'm a little too small for women's sizes but not quite small enough for missus' sizes.

I went to the Old Navy store and discovered that the stores now only carry missus sizes. All the women's sizes have gone back to being exclusively online. This is not a good policy, in my opinion, since you pay shipping and handling even if the clothing does not fit. So between ordering online and trying on jeans in the store, here are my findings:

Old Navy Jeans- Categories & Cuts

The jeans for both missus and women's sizes are categorized the same. However, at the time publishing, the Flirt and the Goddess jeans were not available in women's sizes.

The Diva sits very low on the hips, slim through the hips and thighs and comes in a variety of cut such as boot cut or ankle-hugging. The Flirt also sits very low on the waist but has a higher rising back. The pant legs are cut straight through hip and thigh area and also come in a variety of cuts like flare or boot. The Sweetheart jeans also come in a variety of cuts, such as boot cut, and sit just below the waist. They are relaxed through the hip and thigh area. Lastly, the Goddess jeans are at-waist with a fuller cut through the hip and thighs with a boot cut or straight leg finish.

The jeans also come in short, average, and long lengths.

Old Navy Jeans- Missus Sizes

The missus sizes are 0-20 and tend to run small. The brand is definitely made for women with narrower hips. I can usually wear a size 16 or 18 but with the Old Navy jeans brand, I need to go up to a size 20 to fit my hips. And if you are like me, once you find a pair of jeans that fits you in the hips, the waist does not. This is one benefit Old Navy has over the competition. I found the Sweetheart jeans are relaxed enough in the hips to accommodate me and the waist fits well because it does not sit right at the natural waist line. The jeans stretch just enough to be comfortable but not too much that they stretch out and bag.

Another thought to keep in mind, particularly if you are average height. I normally wear average height clothes, occasionally (depending on the brand) a tall size. Old Navy jeans in the missus sizes are quite long and I wound up purchasing the short length.

Old Navy Jeans- Women's Sizes

I also have a pair of Old Navy jeans in women's size. The sizes run 16-30 and are sold exclusively online. I would normally recommend going to the store first and checking a fit before ordering online but I have used Old Navy for years and I can usually gauge my size. If you have questions about fit, Old Navy's website has a pop-up size chart. (Be sure pop-up blockers are turned off in order to see it.)

The Goddess jeans, which are the fuller fit and sit right at the waist, are probably my favorite pair. The waist is snug without being too tight and the fuller cut in the hips gives enough room without pulling at the zipper. My only complaint is the length. These were average length and they are on the verge of being too short.

Old Navy Jeans- Reminders when Shopping

Every body type is very different, but this is what I found in general with Old Navy jeans: they tend to fit smaller, so you may have to go up a size for the right fit. They also tend not to be consistent in lengths. But they do offer a variety of waistlines, cut, and lengths so you should be able to find something that works. And the jeans are not outrageously priced. Missus sizes start at $29.50 and women's sizes at $32.50.

If you are ordering online, there is a flat rate $5 shipping fee (for standard delivery) that is non-refundable. You can return items that do not fit to any store or send it back using the shipping sticker provided.
