Old School

Mike Hazelwood
Racing through the long corridors of my mind
I find myself in the theater of youth
The hallways fill with laughter of adolescence

Formidable years full of early fond memories
The screech of the teachers chalk I hear
Shivers harmoniously going down my spine
At the point of first contact with the board

A younger innocent time abundantly abounds
In this recollection of reflection
Hand cranked pencil sharpener melodiously sings
The Pledge of Allegiance echoes in the classroom
Followed by the group prayer led by our teacher
Then the four R's of discovery are instilled
Perseverance prevailed from each student

Lunchtime was always filled with fun
Friends talking about the latest Star Wars Movie
Girls swinging in succession on old wooden swings

The theater of my youth
Maceo Elementary School now closed
But its influences live forever
