Oliver Stone Will Direct New Anti-War Commercial Sponsored by MoveOn.org

Lindsey Russell
Known for his anti-war stance and politically charged movies such as "JFK" and "Born on the Fourth of July," Director Oliver Stone is slated to direct a new anti-war commercial for MoveOn.org and VoteVets.org. "The Oscar-winning director and Vietnam veteran will direct a 30-second spot that will air in about three weeks on national TV. It will feature a U.S. veteran of the Iraq war or the family of a veteran discussing the war's impact." (USA Today) The television commercial will serve to increase awareness of what MoveOn.org and VoteVets.org is trying to accomplish, bring the troops home quickly and safely.

While many may be familiar with MoveOn.org as a result of the 2004 Presidential campaign, VoteVets.org does not yet have the name recognition. VoteVets.org is a project of MoveOn.org, and it was created to provide veterans who agree with the aims of MoveOn.org a means to get their message across. "VideoVets: Bring Our Troops Home is an important new project that will use the power of internet video to help spread the stories that folks need to hear most: the truth about how veterans and military families feel about the war." (VideoVets.org) The explanation on the website continues on to state that the vets participating in the project hope to bring the troops home quickly and as safely as possible. There is no room for those believing in the current Iraq War in the project.

One video will be selected from the project to be used in the commercial directed by Oliver Stone. For this particular project, Oliver Stone will be donating his services. However, not everyone is happy with what the influential director is doing. While no one has come out directly to oppose Stone's partnership with MoveOn.org, much harsh criticism can be found in online comments. For every veteran participating in the project sponsored by MoveOn.org, there is another who supports the mission in Iraq. As a result, not all will support the project.

During the 2004 Presidential election, a group of veterans questioned the military service of former presidential candidate John Kerry. They later became known as the Swift Boat vets. As a result of their influential ad campaign, another group of veterans supporting John Kerry made a commercial themselves. To date, there is no word on a planned response from veterans who question the project directed by Oliver Stone and supported by MoveOn.org and VoteVets.org.
