Olivia, the Most Colorful Pig in Children's Literature
Ian Falconer's Runaway Hit Children's Book Series
Maybe her popularity is due, in part, to the authenticity that comes from being based on a real 6-year old, the author's niece. Undoubtedly Olivia's success is due to the minimal, highly expressive illustrations and the stories-of-few words of Ian Falconer. A set and costume designer for such prestigious organizations as the New York City Ballet, the San Francisco Opera, and the Royal Opera House, he has also illustrated covers for The New Yorker.
Nine years since Olivia was published comes a new edition, Olivia: Book and CD. Even in a smaller-sized picture book, Olivia shines. Reading the story on the CD is none other than Dame Edna, eloquently garnishing the story with oh-so-proper enunciation. In the background and between sentences is the music of the fabulous "café society" pianist, Peter Mintun. The combination of the two auditorily illustrating this now-classic book adds up to an above-the-rest story CD.
In between these two versions of Olivia, her popularity exploded. In 2001, Olivia was awarded a Caldecott Honor Medal. Shortly after, Silver Lining Management became the agent for the Olivia brand, and licenses were granted for hundreds of items. In 2006, Olivia appeared on her own postage stamp, in a series honoring children's book animal characters. In 2009, Olivia became a TV star on Nick Jr.
Meanwhile, Ian Falconer continued to write and illustrate more and more Olivia stories. Among the best of the picture books are:
Olivia Saves the Circus (2001) Olivia tells her class of her visit to the circus, in which she fills in for the various circus acts (who all came down with ear aches), and proves that she has an imagination as big as a lion's roar.
Olivia and the Missing Toy (2003) When Olivia's very favorite stuffed bear goes missing, watch out! Olivia searches for her toy at the top of her lungs, even accusing her baby brother. She eventually solves the mystery, but can't stay mad at the culprit for very long.
Olivia Helps with Christmas (2007) The fun of Christmas is all in the preparations and anticipation. Follow Olivia as she and her family shop for gifts, trim the tree, bake cookies and more.
The only question is: What will Olivia be up to next?
