Omega 3's and Depression

Alyssa Russo
I have weekly sessions with a psychologist to manage my depression. A month and a half ago, my psychologist recommended that I take Omega 3 fatty acid supplements to help me with my depression.

Anytime a doctor recommends a treatment for me, I do extensive research on it before I decide to do it. While surfing the net and asking family members and friends about Omega 3 fatty acids, I had come to the conclusion that my psychologist was right. All of the personal stories I read and heard about Omega 3 fatty acids were positive.

I decided to give it a try. I bought a month supply of Omega 3 supplements. Within a couple weeks, I started feeling an decrease in depression as well the anxiety I had also been experiencing. I felt more comfortable being around people. I started feeling almost like my old self again.

I recently ran out of my Omega 3 supplements and have ordered more. I have not taken the supplements for a few days and I'm already feeling the depression coming back. While Omega 3 is not curing my depression, it is certainly helping. I feel that my mind is much clearer when I am taking this supplement.

There are other ways to get Omega 3 fatty acids. That is, by eating fish, such as mackerel, tuna and salmon at least two times a week. I am allergic to salmon and tuna, it makes me break out in hives. I am more comfortable taking the supplement, as I have had no bad side effects taking it.

If you are thinking of choosing Omega 3 fatty acids to help you with your depression, ask your doctor if he/she thinks it may be right for you. Omega 3 supplements come in pill form, liquid or there is another form that is from Coromega and it is like a pudding consistency.

There are Omega 3 fish oil pills that can give you a fishy aftertaste. If you find that unpleasant, look for odorless fish oil pills or pills that do give a fishy aftertaste. It will usually say it on the bottle. I bought my supplements from Coromega. It tastes like a creamsicle. It comes in an orange or lime flavored pudding form. I taste no fish.

You can buy these Omega 3 supplements, also known as fish oil pills, at local supermarkets, pharmacies, drug stores or online. They are definitely worth a try if you suffer from depression. It also helps with other physical and mental problems as well.

I can say that with my trial of Omega 3, that it certainly helped me. When taking the supplements, I feel less anxious, less depressed and my mind is sharper. I can't wait until I get my new shipment in because I want to feel those benefits of taking Omega 3's again. The amount that I take is pretty high (4000 mg a day), due to my depression being very severe. I would ask a doctor first before taking this supplement for depression to determine what would be right for you.

I hope that by spreading the word, that the Omega 3's can help someone else who suffers from depression. I've been on antidepressants in the past and none have worked for me. The only thing I experienced while taking antidepressants was bad side effects. This is truly a great natural alternative to taking medication, without any bad side effects. Only good ones!
