OMG! Michelle Obama Does Not Wear Clothing by African-American Designers; And I Thought that I was the Only One ..

Christopher
So the Black Artists Association is upset with Michelle Obama because she doesn't have any African-Americans designing her clothing. Oh boo hoo; are we really that obsessed with giving every African-American a chance that it has resorted to this. I mean if I do wear clothing from an African-American designer, it was because I really liked it, not because of the convoluted socioeconomic politics of everything having to be by a Black for a Black. I mean honestly, I wear a lot of urban hip-hop gear per se, when I cannot afford anything else and it is in the clearance bin for $5, not because I am "checking" for it.

Michelle Obama probably feels the same way. When they were campaigning much was said of the idea of her getting clothing from the same stores that upper middle class White women do. They liked the way that wore the outfit, but couldn't understand why a Black person making more than $30,000 a year wasn't flaunting the latest Gucci. Is it really a crime not to go out of your way to do so I mean the Obama's have already shown you, during the campaign, that they weren't all obsessed and googly eyed about doing something just because it was connected to something or someone being Black, and now this? Do people ever really, truly, learn or do they just reserve their politics for when it is safe to come out of the woodwork?

Obama is Black enough and Michelle, definitely, if anyone ever was, is Black enough. I mean she wore a green outfit to the inauguration, so she is Black, if you had any reservations because Obama may not come across as your typical Black man yes indeed she is. I mean honestly do you want to give Tracey Reese a job I mean what are you really saying here? I really happen to like Tracy's collections by the way.

If this is the rhetoric that we have to hear from the community who should just be supporting the First family, and putting their partisan slave/field politics aside it will be a long, long, 4 years. It's bad enough that people are still hating on Obama and nit picking every little thing as it is, and they actually said the word "Kumbaya", as if it that is an intelligent substitute for the idea of being cosmopolitain I mean how embarassed am I to be an African-American at this moment ...

This is the first time that I am hearing of this. The Obama's have so many different groups to appease. Too many. I hope that this does not foreshadow future developments.

Yeah they really are. In a contemporary sense though, not so much like it was portrayed on TV.

...regardless of what I liked and didn't like, I didn't have to wear it. That's retarded to me. That's like saying Oprah Winfrey should only read Black books for her book club. Oprah can read whatever the hell she feels like reading just like Michelle Obama should be able to rock what she wants. I dig that she doesn't put million dollar weaves in her hair and wears clothes from discount racks. It makes her so real. I swear that I think the Obamas are real-life Huxtables.

Oh my gawd, I'm so glad you pointed this out. I wrote a blog on MySpace about this exact same topic! I also linked it on Twitter. I won't write a dissertation (I thought that was funny as hell that you typed that in Shaun's comment area; I'm still laughing) about the topic, but I'm just fed up with folks thinking that the Obamas have to be the posterchildren for everything Black. It'd be cool if Michelle found an outfit in Bronzeville (that's a predominantly Black area of Chicago; like our own little Harlem) or supported a Black designer, but she's not obligated to do it. I think that's the problem. People are trying to make bank off of it, and she's like any other woman on Earth. She wants to wear what she thinks is cute, not what everybody else thinks she should wear. I thought her inauguration gown was horrific, but I loved her green (and yes, that definitely made her Sunday morning pew Black sista with the Easter hat kinda Black) outfit during the inauguration ceremony. But regard

I heard about this on the radio (geared towards a black audience) on my way to work and thought it was the most ridiculous thing. It was even more ridiculous because it followed a headline about the 70,000+ jobs that were just lost. I didn't get the full story, or the opinions of the djs or listeners because I had to clock in...but still. RIDICULOUS. I think it's a great thing that our president seemingly represents the black population, and hopefully the minorities across the nation. It's a milestone. It says so much about our nation. But let's not forget that he is half white. Why is he's just automatically labeled "black?" Just because of his skin color? His hair? Why are so many black people claiming the first family? The first family doesn't have to do anything because they are "black." They just have to do what is required of them as the first family.
