On and On

Life's Treasures

Drew Bush
Arms opened wide, tears flowing from our eyes.

I can finally hold you; you came to us from the heavenly skies.

With undisturbed innocence and eternal peace being so hard to find,

It's a privilege to have you grace both of our ailing hearts and cluttered minds.

You are now five and it's your first day of school.

You're wearing your new clothes and shades; man you look so cool!

I watch you get on the bus and I begin to think.

I realize my little baby is a baby no more and as you get on the bus, I give you a wink.

You are now thirteen and yes I'm starting to turn gray.

Has it already been thirteen years to this day?

I wave to you from the window as you go out with your friends.

It seems that the years of piƱatas and pin the tale on the donkey have come to an end.

You are now eighteen and bigger than your old man.

Tonight is your graduation night and I'm your biggest fan.

I snap a picture as you grab your diploma and a tear leaves my eye because I realize that

my son is now a man and he's prepared to go out into the world and fly.

You are now twenty two and you've finished four years of college.

I've sat back and watched as you gained overwhelming amounts of knowledge.

I went to the mailbox one day and got your student loan bill in the mail and

I threw it aside and smiled because you went to school and didn't fail.

You are now twenty eight and you've met the love of your life.

Today is your wedding day and I'm ignoring all the strife.

I watch as you stare into your love's starry eyes.

Stronger and stronger become our family ties.

You are now thirty and you're in the hospital room with your wife.

I imagine she is screaming bloody murder as she prepares to give birth to new life.

You came out into the lobby and gave the breaking news.

I am the grandfather of a beautiful little girl with the most striking baby blues.

Now I can look back and say I did something right.

I raised a wonderful son who makes the stars shine bright.

Now I have the privilege of watching his family grow.

Over the hills the sun will surely glow.
