On the Discovery of the Missing Link

"I Believe Them Bones Are Me" - Alice in Chains

J L Carey Jr
We study the dead
To try and understand
Where we came from
And where we're going

Unearthing the tree,
Working in absolutes,
Brushing off roots, branches
And belief systems

As Ida is exhumed,
Like a time capsule
Containing an answer
47 million years old

But, the dead are just that,
And... Darwinius masillae
Still leaves us asking:
Who put this all in motion?

Each question answered
Simply leading us back
To this perplexity,
And our assured mortality.

Oh, and awesome reference used in title as well....one of my all-time favorite bands ever.

HAR-HAR@ JL and Walton, we made a "discovery" as well, man I love research except when some of the supposed pro's don't use it. 1983, heh, what a riot. Great poem JL, the puzzle of who put it in motion to me is more a matter of what. Science even in its shortcomings does provide the clearest picture of our existence, it all started with Adam alright....A-T-O-M.

Geez, can't type today. Typos below on "something" and "quote". The poem I was thinking of was "Flicker".

I really enjoyed this one. I think we share some of the same ideology. It reminds me of somthing I wrote about "science and poetry". I'll see if I can find and post it. (What ego! Stop me before I quite myself!)

I thought that was funny also Walton. The original team that found it did not know what they had found and so it sat for years until another team purchased it from them, likely for much less than what it is worth, then declared they had found the missing link. Nice.

Great poem. I like how they called it a 'Descovery' many times on the news I saw, as if they just found it; then deep into the confrence they mention it had been in the museum since '83 lol.

You ask a good question here. You must be a thinking man. Listen, I believe in the missing link; my ex-husband is the missing link. (sorry I couldn't resist; I'm quite the comedian). :)

Powerful use of imagery...makes one really think!

No notification of this post, JL! Deep poem. You're right about asking the question, and I get irritated when people think they have all the answers re the meaning of life. Saw a programme about Ida a few days ago. Seems like she had a bit of a hard life 47 million years ago.
