On March 6, 2011 "Desperate Housewives" Susan Delfino is Desperately Searching for a Kidney

Susan Gets a Kidney from a Most Unlikely Source

Connie Wilson
ABC, Sunday, March 6, 2011, 9 PM (ET) "Searching," Sunday night's episode of "Desperate Housewives," focused on Susan Delfino's quest for a kidney. She is given bad news by her doctor regarding her failing kidney, and Susan suggests that she and Mike celebrate their July anniversary early, by having a picnic at "their" favorite picnic area in the forest.

Naturally, nothing goes right.

Mike puts the picnic basket on the roof of the car and so they have to go somewhere to order take-out. The drive-through doesn't get their order right. Just when they are getting cozy in the field, some Civil War re-enactors barge in on the nearly naked couple. After that, the car won't start. All in all, things are not going well for the characters that James Denton and Teri Hatcher play. Mike (James Denton) is very upset, because he believes that Susan is dying and he is resentful and feeling powerless and angry.

Bree Van der Kamp

Bree Van der Kamp (Marcia Cross) decides to hostess an event that brings all the neighbors to her house, with the intention of finding a kidney donor for Susan, A nurse stands by to test all attendees to see if any are a match for Susan. Flyers are also distributed to try to find a donor to give Susan (Terri Hatcher) the gift of life.

Renee Perry

Meanwhile, Vanessa Williams' character of Renee Perry decides she should adopt a child. Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman) suggests that she first take their youngest daughter for an evening, as a test run. Renee takes the baby to the same restaurant where Tom and Lynette are having dinner, and basically foists her off on a restaurant employee. Lynette and Tom play a little trick on the diva by pretending that their daughter is "lost." Renee realizes, by episode's end that she is not cut out for motherhood.

Gabrielle Solis

There is also a plot strand involving a talent show that Gabrielle Solis' daughter is participating in, where the chubby girl plans to tap dance. The gay neighbors are there, supporting their adopted daughter, who is playing a violin solo. By the end of the talent show, Gaby realizes it is about supporting your child, no matter what, not about winning or losing.

Beth Young Exits Permanently

Bree turns out to be a match as a kidney donor for Susan, but so does Beth Young. Beth has just been rejected by both her husband Paul and her mother in prison. At episode's end, she makes the supreme sacrifice, committing suicide, but making sure that Susan Delfino will get her kidney. Words to live by: "Our lives are brief. That's why it's important to search for meaning." Also in early voice-over, "But the things that bring us pleasure might not be enough to give them meaning without someone to love."
