On Sleepless Nights and Words that Should Have Stayed

words
like errant soldiers stumble
out of line
guns drawn
prepared to fire
at the nearest thing that moves

and it was you.

in the back-part of my throat
where gather tears
and sick regrets
i called them back inside
begged to be unsaid

it was the dark
it was the fear
it was the distance
made me let them out

between us is the opposite
of finite things and
calendars

(when time slips by and leaves you
cold and stagnant
watching as we
slip away-
we are not
anything like that
we will not be like that
i know)

my saving grace is that you know my heart
far better than i do.
