On the Surface

A fine line between the kind and the mistreated
If you don't speak your mind, injustice will be repeated
But when you're so used to keeping the peace
How do you express what has always been kept underneath...

On the surface there's a smile
On the surface there's a forgiving light
On the surface you can overlook hostile
On the surface you aren't concerned with your rights

But on the inside you're aching to be heard
On the inside you neglecting you takes a toll
On the inside there are so many unspoken words
Under the surface is where you protect your soul

A fine line between kind and manipulative
If you look closely you can see the silhouette of a little kid
Juvenile ways of someone who's full grown
Decisions and mistakes are no fault of their own

On the surface there's a smile
On the surface there's a giving hand
On the surface a sense of style
On the surface is someone who seems to understand

But on the inside there's a scheme
On the inside there's a jealousy so fierce
On the inside there's a streak so mean
Under the surface a thousand words that pierce

Who would you rather be?
The one who can't sleep after a day spent trying to keep the peace?
Or the one who runs 'round bulldozing anyone in their path?
Breaking hearts with no remorse and never looking back?

A fine line between strong beliefs and hypocrite
If you preach light and love, how can you deny it
Is there an exception to the rule when you've tried and tried and tried
How do you invest in someone who's lied and lied and lied

Wish I could stand up for those who get pushed around
That includes myself... at least I get back up when knocked down
This constant battle, will I ever get past this...
Will I ever be, the me inside, on the surface?
