You will need to research your subject - both sides. If you don't know what the other side is all about then you can't properly and knowledgeably argue your own point.
Once you have decided your point of view and researched the subject, it is time to put your thoughts in order. Make an outline if necessary or just jot a few thoughts down - you should have been making notes on what you found while you were researching.
In writing the paper itself, the first paragraph should be the statement of the argument and your position on that argument. Be clear and concise. Make sure there is no mistake on where you stand on the subject at hand.
In each successive paragraph state a reason why you are taking that stance and provide factual information to back up you point of view. Remember anyone can state an opinion but unless you can back it up with something substantial it doesn't mean a thing. Double check your facts. Make sure you didn't make a mistake. Nothing will sink your argument faster than misinformation.
Avoid making statements like some people think, or they say, and other remarks like that. those kind of statements will not help you point of view or argument; they can only harm it.
Don't muddle your point of view by making remarks - especially unsubstantiated ones - on the opposite side. This will not help your stance only weaken it. Stick to your point of view and let someone else argue the other side. After all, that's the point of the paper in the first place.
An argumentative paper is your opinion on a topic backed up by factual information. Siting sources and stating statistics are an asset in such a position paper; but only if they are accurate and help to make your point.
