Once Again Tylenol is Faced with Problems

Tylenol, which is one of the brand name over the counter medications manufactured by the Johnson and Johnson pharmaceutical company is faced with yet another dilemma. According to WebMD Tylenol, benadryl, Zyrtec, and Motrin children's medications were voluntarily recalled by Johnson and Johnson. The reasons for the recalls were due to manufacturing defects. According to the FDA so far there have been no serious injuries reported. Once again Tylenol's integrity is on the line. Although that is good news, yet Tylenol, a company that has had its share of problems once again is on bad terms with consumers.

The FDA has stated that there were reports of at least 775 reports of serious side effects from the recall by Johnson and Johnson McNeil Division however; none of them were from Tylenol. At one point Tylenol had become a household name for all of the wrong reasons. Back in 1982 Tylenol experienced a recall of just its brand. This public relations nightmare became known as the "Tylenol crisis." Someone had randomly put deadly doses of cyanide in bottles of extra strength Tylenol. There were several deaths as a result of the poisonings. Many of these deaths for some reason occurred in the Chicago area. It was later discovered that these poisonings were not done at the manufacturing level but someone had taken bottles of the shelves and contaminated them with cyanide.

It took years for Tylenol to rebound from financial losses that it suffered as a result of the events that took place in 1982. Tylenol had gone from a highly used brand name medication to one that consumers were afraid to use. The person that was responsible for the Tylenol poisonings was never brought to justice. When Tylenol was finally able to fully recover it actually revolutionized the pharmaceutical industry. Tylenol introduced the tamper proof resistant seals for all of its bottles of medications. These seals prevented bottles of is medications from being tampered with without going unnoticed. This eventually became industry standard for other brands of medications. Thanks to the new quality control methods that Tylenol implemented it was able to restore consumer confidence in its product.
