Tom Hanks played the 12 year old trapped in the body of a 30 year old man, Josh Baskin. Poor Josh made a wish at a traveling carnival's fortune teller machine "to be big." after he was rejected by an older girl that he liked.
Both he and his friend didn't think his wish would come true since they discovered that the machine was unplugged. The funny thing is, that his wish did come true; and in a 'big" way! He awoke the next morning in an adult body but still with his boy's mentally.
The rest of the movie consists of Josh living his life in Manhattan as a toy tester and experiencing adult issues for the first time.
He is pursued by an ambitious co-worker, Susan, played by Elizabeth Perkins., who is using him to get to the top. It turns out that his innocent charm has won the heart of the boss, Mr. MacMillan, played by Robert Loggia. And, anyone who has been the movie will know the most memorable scene is that of Robert and Tom dancing on the giant piano keys in FAO Schwartz Toy Store.
His friend Billy kept in touch as they both tried to figure out how to undo this horrible wish. He tried to locate the traveling carnival to get the fortune telling machine to undo his wish.
In the end, Josh did return home and I guess he learned a valuable lesson. We've all wanted to grow up too fast because we thought we were missing something. The old adage"be careful what you wish for" was never truer in this instance.
I liked this movie very much because it touched my heart and soul. Tom Hanks played his role with warmth, innocence and believability.
You can't rush your life and skip steps along the way. You'll definitely miss out on the little things that matter.
"Big" was released in 1988 as a fantasy, comedy and I'd say, adventure movie directed by Penny Marshall, of Laverne and Shirley fame. Other actors in the movie were
John Heard who played Elizabeth Perkin's boyfriend, Paul, David Moscow who played little Josh and Mercedes Roehl, played Josh's stressed out mom. Jared Rushton was Josh's best friend Billy along with Jon Lovitz, another co-worker, Scotty Brennen.
If you like stories that are suitable for the whole family with a moral and happy ending then see this soon.
