One in Four Homeless Persons Are Veterans of War

Did you know that 1 of every 4 homeless people are veterans? Well, a recent study proves this. Although, homeless people only make up 11% of the population. It has also been proven that all the veterans are not old in age some of them are young. They are coming home from Iraq and going to the homeless shelters one after another. In a comparison from 20 years ago the number of homeless veterans on any night of the week has been about 200,00.

Some people who did the survey said the early sign of veterans pouring in from Iraq and Afghanistan is not a good sign for the number of homeless people. Studies also show that it took about a year for Vietnam Veterans to show up in the homeless population, but because of the rapid an frequent deployment of soldiers it is happening more with younger veterans of war. People who work to provide shelter to the homeless and to provide money hope that the new number of young veterans will shed a little light on how bad it is really getting. Maybe now people will look at it more seriously and there will be more government funds to help provide shelter for the veterans.

The Iraq vets who are becoming homeless are more likely to be women. The women are less likely to have a substance abuse problem, but are more likely to have mental damage. Overall, 45% of the homeless have been diagnosed with some type of mental illness. Most of the people who stick with some kind of program at a homeless shelter or similar places succeed in what they want to do later in life.

Some unusual traits of the present war may be leading to homelessness so soon after serving. Also, the long repeated tours of duty may make it harder to come back home and make it a regular lifestyle again. An obstacle that many veterans face is that they wait to long to seek help after being out on the street.

So, I am wondering this and I am sure there are a few of you out there doing the same. Why are these brave men and women overseas fighting our war? So that when they come home they won't have a home. Are they over there to just come home and be to afraid to live a normal life again because of all the trauma. They should all be having welcome home parties and spending the rest of their lives happy and with their friends and family. Will no one do anything to stop this? Why are we doing this to our fellow Americans? Especially the ones who are brave enough to fight this long horrible war.

I know homeless veterans. Most had jobs, careers, bought homes, married.~the ones that served in Viet Nam. The problem was being forced to join the military at 18 and put in the position to kill or be killed by a 13 year old. They have a lot of mental trauma, their marriages fall apart due to drinking or drugging to forget. Many get Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which is not the same as today's newly home Iraqi vets who have post traumatic stress. Without a time period to adjust and come to terms with the horrors of children dying due to our bombing and other things, they often become homeless quickly. They are also more likely to develop PTSD and be plagued for a life time.
