One Laptop Per Child: A Way to Give and Recieve This Christmas

Ainsley Patterson
The One Laptop Per Child program is designed to help children in developing countries by providing each school-aged child with a connected laptop to empower them to learn. Since November 12 of this year One Laptop Per Child has been offering a Give One, Get One special, where everyone who gives a laptop to a school-aged child in a developing country will also get a laptop for a child in their life. This offer will only last through December 31 of this year.

The laptop that you are donating is an XO laptop which is described by One Laptop Per Child as, "...extremely durable, brilliantly functional, energy-efficient, responsive, and fun." One Laptop Per Child has taken everything into consideration when designing these laptops, from local environmental conditions to local language. The XO laptop has an amazing amount of features listed below:

-A built in camera capable of taking both color photos and video recording. This feature illuminates a green LED light when in use so as to prevent unauthorized recording.
-Built in speakers and amplifier as well as a jack for headphones and external speakers.
-Two built in game controllers that can be used when the screen is up or folded down.
-Built in microphone for voice recording.
-A screen that can display in full color or in black and gray so it is easy to use for those children who attend school outdoors.
-A button for screen rotation so that the screen can be read from any direction.
-Antennae that flip up on both sides of the screen to connect that laptop to a wireless network. When flipped down they help to keep dirt out of the jacks on the side of the screen.
-Power jack that connect to a power outlet, it also accepts power from a solar panel, both to charge the XO laptop's battery.
-USB ports to support peripherals.
-A built in memory slot.
-A keyboard with built in shortcuts.
-A touchpad designed for finger or stylus use.
-A screen that rotates around so that it can be folded down facing out for more use.
-A durable handle for easy transport.

So One Laptop Per Child is obviously offering a great product in the XO laptop, but how can you give one of these great computers to a child living in a developing country as well as a child in your life? If you opt to Give One, Get One, then you make a $399 donation to One Laptop Per Child, $200 of which is tax deductible as a charitable donation. If you choose this option then one XO laptop will be sent to a school-aged child in a developing country and another will be sent on your behalf to a child in your life. If you would rather just give an XO laptop to a child in a developing country then just donate $200, per laptop you wish to donate, to One Laptop Per Child. There is also the option to donate in an amount of 100 or more, there is a special link in their "Donate Now" section, and the donor gets to choose where the XO laptops go.

So consider giving the gift of learning to a child this Christmas with a donation to One Laptop Per Child.

I hope this program remains successful. These children really need these to promote their education.

I saw a segment on 60 mintues about the one laptop for every child. What caught my attention was that big corporations like Intel are trying to take away the "competition", so to speak. Companies like intel are selling their laptops at cheaper prices. Sounds like big corporate push arounds. But in the end, the kids all benefit.

Sounds like a good program. The lap top looks like something I'd like for my self!

I'd heard of this before. It's an interesting program.
