'One Life to Live': One Last Prison Break and OLTL Will Be Gone for Good

Bringing Back Prisoners is Easier Than Bringing Back the Dead

Carol Rucker
After 43 years on the air, "One Life to Live" has only one week until it goes away forever. After that, another talk/reality/makeover show arrives to take it's place. OLTL should go out with a big bang, and that's exactly what they're doing.

You may recall how recently defunct soap, "All My Children" brought dead stars back to life during the final weeks. "One Life to Live" is bringing former stars back as well, but they're doing it in a slightly more believable way. Llanview 's returning residents are escaped Statesville prison inmates; and they started showing up last week for a final series goodbye.

Prison Break!

So how did all those dastardly criminals get loose? Some sort of a high tech power outage freed a few hundred inmates. (Could escaping from prison really be that easy?) The worst of the worst prisoner's went free, but mostly the criminals with grudges against OLTL's first families. But you guessed already, didn't you?

Victoria Lord and family got a visit from cult psycho, Mitch Laurence

Mitch, the mass murderer, cult leader, evildoer, prophet wannabe and Lord/Buchanan family nemesis, escaped prison along with everyone else. What a shame. It took so long to get him behind bars in the first place. Evil Mitch went to prison for committing a bunch of murders and doing a lot of other bad things; but his sneakiest act was having a Viki/Mitch embryo implanted into Viki while she was pregnant with hubby Clint's child (a separated-at-birth-story that came out years later). Mitch stole Clint's biological daughter, Natalie, and had trailer park, hairdresser Roxy raise her. When Nat grew up, Mitch married her and claimed Jessica as his rightful spawn. Now he's back.

The first thing Mitch did when he escaped was head to Victoria Lord's mansion. (a lot of the OLTL folks have mansions.) Now he's kidnapped his poor ex-wife (who would also be her sister's sort-of twin and ex step-mom.) Poor Nat, just when she'd finally reunited with John because her baby really is his, Mitch is holding her hostage until he gets Jess back. After he gets his way, he plans to conceive a child with Natalie by force.

Two inmates paid the Mannings a visit at the other Lord mansion

OLTL got their series ending party started early when they brought back the original Todd Manning a few months ago. He too had been in a prison of sorts. He was detained 7 years by his super secret agent mother, Irene (Viki's sister), whom everyone thought was dead. No one missed Todd because his mom brainwashed his brother, Victor (another twin nobody knew about), and made him think he was the real Todd, done over with plastic surgery. Yup, soaps get complicated.

The Manning/Lord household got a visit from Cole. He's Star (Todd's teenage daughter) Manning's baby's daddy and was in prison for involuntary manslaughter. Cole didn't have much time left on his sentence, but he escaped because he simply had to see his little girl, Hope.. and his dad and mentally distraught psychologist mom. He just found out his dad was really alive after all this time and he never did stop loving Star. Hopefully Cole can find his mom and dad and get his true love back. He might just do that if Todd can keep escaped convict, Hanna O'Connor (who is in love with Cole), from killing her. She botched Star's murder the first time.

Bo and Nora Buchanan fought off Troy at the Buchanan mansion

As Llanview DA, Nora (Jewish mother of the first biracial child on a soap) was the great legal mind that put a lot of those escaped prisoner's behind bars in the first place. But only the good ex doctor/kidnapper, Troy MacIver, was determined to pay her a visit. He was obsessed with Nora and he wanted her back, but he also wanted to give her a lethal injection.

He'll do just that unless escaped killer, Lindsay Rappaport (who apparently gained a little weight in prison), gets to Bo in time to help. Lindsay once tried to kill Nora herself, and she's still in love with Bo. Yet she showed up at the Buchanan mansion (dead Asa's gift to daughter in law, Nora) to tell Bo about Troy because it was the right thing to do.

So how will it all end?

Okay, so Bo and Lindsay showed up to stop Troy just as he was about to inject Nora with some bad stuff. John showed up to stop Mitch as he was about to assault Natalie on the piano bench. Hanna got into Lord mansion number 2 (where Star lives) and was about to grab Star's little brother Sam; but Todd got there just in time. Thank goodness, Mitch didn't come after Viki; but unfortunately escaped psycho, Allison Perkins (Mitch's go-to disciple for kidnappings, murders and baby switches) arrived at her door instead. She had a gun and a lot of tales to tell. Is that whole double-daddy-twin thing really real?

In a recent episode a lot of guns were drawn and shots were fired. Now a lot of situations need to be resolved before the final OLTL curtain call. A lot of questions need to be answered, as well:

  • Who got shot?
  • Who will Live?
  • Who's the Daddy?
  • Is Snoop Dogg really friends with Bo Buchanan and will he return to sing the "One Life To Live" theme song one more time?

Tune in and see. You only have one more week.

I just wonder if the "new" shows that ABC thinks everyone wants to watch will be on 40+ yrs from now? I seriously don't think so.

It's sad to see soaps disappearing. I Never really got into them much but my mom watched them all. There's something about the atmosphere and the sounds of the shows that bring memories back. I have been curious to see what a final episode of a soap would be like. We surely don't need ANOTHER irritating reality show to take their place.

Wow - I never thought I'd see this day coming. A good wrap-up article, thanks.

I read something the other day, Richard, that they weren't too hopeful about either "All My Children" or "One Life to Live" ever going on line. They say it was to complicated to arrange things with the actors and writers.

    well written - thank you
