One Mile Walkathon for Sex Crime Awareness

Did you know that one out of three women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime? Wednesday, April 22 Bay Area supporters will come together to walk through the streets of downtown San Jose in women's shoes to create awareness of the sex crimes committed in our valley.

The public is invited to participate in this annual event for the YWCA of Silicon Valley. A pair of high heels will be provided during 4pm registration at Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

"97% of sexual assaults are committed by men," according to the YWCA of Silicon Valley. "The media sexualizes violence & makes it appear glamorous. The images & messages we see everyday lead to an acceptance of violent sexual crimes."

Among community contributors against sex violence are local agencies such as the San Jose Fire Department, the San Jose Police force, and local politicians are scheduled to attend.

"Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" participants will be entered in a Best of Show contests. Also, those participants who have raised the most money for the cause will be awarded.

Contributors have planned a reception to celebrate the one mile walkathon at San Jose's downtown Crowne Plaza. Food and drink will be provided to participants and an award ceremony will follow.

All proceeds go to the YWCA's Rape Crisis Center which provides a 24 hour crisis line, (408) 287-3000, for survivors, family members and friends of victims. The program also offers free confidential crisis counseling.
