One Night at Dennys

Theresa Johnson
I was working for the Dennys in Holly Hill, Florida, My shift had just ended. I decided to go to the corner booth where soime friends of mine were sitting. I joined them and ordered a glass of sweet tea. We all sat around for about two or three hours.

About 3 hours after my shift, a red-headed gentleman came in and sat at the bar. The server that was on-duty at the time made him a cup of coffee, and then she decided to introduce him to our table. He was put in the corner next to me. I sat up to get a drink of my tea, and he happened to place his arm on the back of the booth, not knowing that I had been leaning back in that spot. When I laid back, I decided not to move, because it had been my seat first. I figured if he did not like me leaning against his arm, he could move his arm.

His arm did not move, nor did I. We became almost instantaneous friends after that event. I later fell in love with him. We have now been married since October 21, 2009. I would not change a second of the night at Dennys. I feel that I had learned a lot about how to be able to let someone in to your heart. He also taught me how to be a lot more patient.

That Dennys may have shut their doors for good, but the memories that my husband and I have from the place where we met will live on for ever. We have had many interesting events take place in there from general debates, fight, parties, a few engagements, but none quite like the night that I would meet the man that I would marry seven years later,

The Dennys crew and regulars went their own separate ways after Dennys shut the doors. There are very few of them that even socialize with each other now. Dennys in many ways was a local community center. You would have people hanging out together in there no matter what background they came from.

My husband still to this day will joke around that I will never take him out to another Dennys again, because the last Dennys he was in, he met his wife. I told him if he meets a new wife at another Dennys he may want to rethink how he is going about picking up women.

I know exactly what you mean....I too met my future husband whom I am set to marry next year at the Denny's I currently work at. He was a regular customer who talked to all the servers and managers. I decided to talk to him one night and we became friends, which led to us dating and finding out that we were a perfect match for each other. He is the greatest man I have ever known and I owe my happiness to that night at Denny's. Funny the places you meet your soul mate....
