One Note Up on Me

Sort of like Chess, it is My Move

Michele Starkey
There has always been a game that I have never been able to master in my life and it is chess. It relies upon the notion that every move has a counter and must be played well in advance. I'm not a strategic planner anymore although in my day, I was quite the strategist. These days, I'm more preoccupied with other things and planning my 'moves' isn't something that interested me until recently.

For years, my husband and I have played a sort of strange game. I've written about it before, it involved a note he left for me at the florist with a bouquet of roses. It was supposed to say, "Love you Wamore" which was our joke at that time. I would say, "I love you" and he would counter with, "I love you more" to which I would reply, "I love you way more."

Except that when he asked the florist to write on the card, "Love you Wamore" she misinterpreted it and wrote, "Love you, Wayne Moore." It caused quite a stir in the office among my co-workers who knew my husband's name is Keith.

Alas, I digress and must get back to the recent moves in the house. I left a note in his lunch bag that said, "I love you wamore." A day passed with no note response and I thought that I had won this round.

Until this morning when I reached into the cabinet to grab my coffee mug and there it was, strategically placed inside of my cup.

This puts a whole new spin on the game between the husband and I. Not only do I have to come up with the best notes, now I have to place them in places where only he'll uncover them.

He is officially one note up on me.

I was reminded of the sign during the recent royal wedding that said, "Checkmate, Kate. You got your King."

I have my "king" but I still need to make a move -- any suggestions?

Such sweet ideas! I am glad to hear that love like yours exist. I used to do notes to the husband and kids, but he asked one day if I thought of him as one of the kids so I stopped leaving the notes.
