One Red Leaf

Mireille Larkins
One red leaf
On a plant so green
That it worried how it got there
Wondered what the leaf might mean

So with the help of the wind
The plant did cast the leaf away
And it thought no more about it --
Until the very next day.

Five brown leaves
On a plant so green
Now it worried how they got there
So concerned what they might mean

But with a great gust of wind
The plant did shake the leaves away
And thought about them nothing further
Until one day, it felt the rain.

Tiny, hungry bugs
Pretty plant, so green
Couldn't see them in its branches
All it saw were sunbeams.

The tiny bugs ate through the evening
And finally, when the rain fell,
All those green leaves drooped, then dropped
Now the plant knew, very well

That with one red leaf
It should guess something went awry
And might have done something to stop it
Now empty branches softly sigh.
