One Silent Night Review

From time to time there are moments when we want to read something different than what we are used to reading. There are books in all genres that spark the imagination and cause us to crave more from the same author, or even more from the same genre. For months Sherrilyn Kenyon's One Silent Night drew me in, but I never read it because it was a "romance" novel, until one day I picked it up and was amazed and spellbound. Kenyon is the first author in a long while who has been able to captivate my imagination and draw me into her story and allow me to imagine her characters and setting, and everything that is happening within the story. Kenyon's work has been described as putting "a contemporary spin on classical mythology...irresistible," by Publishers weekly. The Boston Globe has described her writing as "brisk, ironic, sexy, and relentlessly imaginative." Kenyon's work stands out from all others.

One Silent Night is about the son of Apollo, nephew to Artemis: Stryker and his lust for vengeance. He has unleashed the big bad War onto the world, but War has other plans and turns on the man who released him. Now Stryker, his enemies, and ex-wife Zephyra, must come together to defeat War and put the world back in order. Stryker commands an army of demons and vampires cursed by his own father, he tries to avenge his sister and orders War to annihilate his Dark Hunter enemies. When Zephyra entered the picture Stryker is now at war with not only War, but with his ex-wife as well; and she brings along a surprise. Dark Hunters unite to battle War and send him back to where he belongs, and Stryker is forced to face his past once and for all. The storyline unique and different, but still upholds the traditions of ancient mythology.

Sherrilyn Kenyon has the ability to captivate her readers from beginning to end. Her descriptions are imaginative and make the characters and setting jump out at the readers. The fact that she uses mythology adds a new twist to the ancient stories that we are so accustomed too. Even though the characters are gods and goddess, demons and vampires, Kenyon writes their stories so passionately that the reader is able to really relate to how they are feeling, what they are going through. She puts a twist on things, but giving gods and goddess, non-human characters, human characteristics. She has an element within her descriptions that cannot be compared with other authors. When reading this novel I expected sex scenes, and descriptions that would make me blush, but the focus of Kenyon's heat and passion is on feelings and sensations. There are sexual scene, but nothing that would cause someone like me to blush. Her descriptions of the passion and between characters just heat up the page and are so sexy and alluring.

Her words draw readers in and makes me the never want to put the book down. Kenyon has a talent for writing and shows in all of her Dark Hunter and Dream Hunter novels. She has characters and storylines that her fans crave and desire more from. She incorporates different characters from one novel into another. Some characters from say Devil May Cry appears within One Silent Night. Some are major characters others have minor roles in the storyline, but are there none the less, linking the stories together and reminding readers that it is an ongoing, interwoven story. I honestly could not put this novel or Devil May Cry down. Sherrilyn Kenyon has talent and has an imagination that encompasses so much and is something that the readers want and expect from novels that they read.

Never underestimate a novel and as they always say, never judge a book based on it's cover, though the cover art for Kenyon's novels draw you in, it's what drew me in. You never know what a book or a genre is going to hold unless you try it at least once. You may be surprised at what you will find when you give a new genre a chance. I never thought I would find a new author with just one book. Sherrilyn Kenyon has a writing style is like no other modern author that I have found.
